Orange Crush-Revell 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

$159

Very rare kit with a fascinating history. Around 1958/59, Orange Crush of Mexico offered a promotion. They offered free, colorful, plastic model cars if you collected correctly-marked Orange Crush bottle caps. The most common set is the 1/32 scale Revell Highway Pioneer series - although there is no mention of Revell or Lodela anywhere on the box. Orange Crush had the boxes and even the instructions specially made for them with no mention of a manufacturer. What most people have never seen is the other cars the Crush offered beyond the Highway Pioneers. Again, these were from Revell (Lodela) molds and this time 'Revell' is listed two short box sides in addition to Orange Crush. Inside, the instructions are specially made for Orange Crush but also have the Revell logo. Inside is the classic Revell kit with detailed engine and chassis, opening hood, detailed interior with separately molded inside panels and driver and passenger figures. Molded in ivory plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Once you had your bottle caps, they could be redeemed one of two ways - at the Orange Crush truck and at a Modelandia Hobby House. Orange Crush also released two full-color booklets and a complete paint set for the cars. A colorful cardboard box held 7 colors of paint in glass bottles, complete with 'Orange Crush' screw-on caps! Robina S.A. was the bottler or distributor of Orange Crush in Mexico at that time. The box side shows three sizes of OC - Family Size (Familiar), Grand (Grande) and Normal. You could also obtain models with Titan bottle caps. Titan was also bottled by Robina and came in large (Titan) and smaller (Titancito) sizes and apparently more than one flavor, judging from the box side illustration. It is not know for how long the promotion lasted, but Orange Crush was one of the most dominant soft drinks in Mexico at that time. Here is one clue: some boxes claim that Modelandia had 13 locations; other boxes, which obviously came later on, claim 19 locations. This indicated that the promotion went on for a significant amount of time. Oddly enough, the '56 Eldorado box does not mention Modelandia, although we know they were deeply involved in the Crush Highway Pioneers. This kit must be shipped insured.

Pyro 1948 Lincoln Continental, 1/25, C330-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$44

From the mid 1960s and the only larger scale kit of this classic car. 'Good' kit with full engine, removable hood and convertible top. Molded in a very nice dark green. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. Edsel Ford himself sketched the design for the large V-12 equipped convertible with the assistance of Bob Gregory. The cars were incredibly popular. This was likely due to good looks and not the power plant; it made only 125 hp and was always troublesome.

Cleveland Douglas SBD-3 Dauntless - Balsa Flying Aircraft - (SBD3), 1/16, SF-89

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$139

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Aurora Aurora ATLANTIS Merchant Raider Factory Model, 1/456

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: No Box

$1400

In the 1950s and early 1960s the major model manufacturers would create factory-built and painted display models. These were intended for hobby shops to help stimulate sales. These were disposable items that were produced in very low numbers, so they are very rare today. Here is one of the rarest of the rare: The 'Rattlesnake of the Ocean' Merchant Sea Raider Atlantis factory build up by Aurora. The unbuilt kit is among the most valuable and rare Aurora single kits, making the factory built display much more so. This one is in excellent original condition. The painting is 1950s professional quality as is the gluing. The glue has held up well and all parts of the ship are very solid. The ship is very clean. The original paint is almost flawless with some light scratches on the port side. The 'ATLANTIS' decals are perfect. The stack 'K' starboard decal is mint; the port one is missing 2mm of the white top on one leg of the 'K'. The factory cardboard wood-tone base is 100% intact with typical corner splits on the bends and edge wear. The removable covers display is mint with all 10 gun/hanger covers present. The kit is now 100% complete. It was missing 4 small parts which I am providing. I took them from an original Atlantis kit, so they are 100% correct. (they are the propeller, 'Y' rear crane, rear flag and rudder) Overall, this is an excellent and rare investment piece for the advanced Aurora collector. Shipping insurance required. From modeler Stephen Payne: Recommend that the builder or collector of this kit add the following books to their collection-The German Raider Atlantis by Captain Bernhard Rogge & Wolfgang Frank & Sea Raider Atlantis, Story of a German Surface Raider by Ulrich Mohr & A.V. Sellwood. The first book is by the ATLANTIS commander, Kapitan zur See Bernhard Rogge. He oversaw the transformation and outfitting in Bremen and captained the ship during her 602 day operational voyager which sank or captured 22 ships totaling 144,384 t (142,104 long tons). Rogge also was one of the few German officers of flag rank who was not arrested by the Allies after the war due to the way he had exercised his command of Atlantis. Captain J. Armstrong White, captain of the British CITY OF BAGHDAD, which Atlantis sank in July 1941, stated, "His treatment of prisoners left respect, instead of hatred."The second book is by the ATLANTIS First Officer, Ulrich Moher. Both books read much the same as the events related are the same, but it is interesting to see these events from the two perspectives. Captain White (see above) wrote the foreword to Atlantis, the Story of a German Surface Raider, written by U. Mohr & A. V. Sellwood. The German auxiliary cruiser Atlantis (HSK 2), known to the Kriegsmarine as Schiff 16 (SHIP 16) and to the Royal Navy as Raider-C, was a converted merchant vessel to German Hilfskreuzer (auxiliary cruiser) used for commerce raiding. Commerce raiders did not seek to engage warships, but rather attack enemy merchant shipping; the measures of success are tonnage destroyed (or captured) and time spent "at large" holding up enemy resources. Atlantis had the longest raiding career of any German commerce raider in either world war.

KVZ Tupolev Tu-134 Interflug Crusty, 1/100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair-

$79

Rare kit of this Soviet Transport nicknamed 'Crusty' by NATO. The Tu-134 is a design similar to the DC-9 and has seen widespread and successful service. It is perhaps most famous (or infamous) for the death of Mozambican president in 1986. The Tu-134 was a gift from the Soviets. When returning from the meeting, the aircraft crashed into mountains inside South Africa. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. KVZ was a Eastern German manufacturer of kits during the Cold War. They made a fascinating range of civil and military subjects. If it were not for their efforts, there would be many 'Iron Curtain' subjects (especially civil) that we would never have injection molded kits of.

They are very nicely done and impossible to see from the outside.

Revell Sears Buggy Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H45-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$38

1953 early issue molded in green plastic. This is from the issues produced by Gowland & Gowland as it carrier their 'balloon' logo on the side. Never started. The parts are still sealed in the correct 'krinkle' clear bag. Includes instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.
