Monogram Speedee-Bilt Grumman F6F Hellcat - Flying Scale Model, G12-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

Sold

Scale flying wooden rubber powered model from the early 1950s. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top, as this F6F kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut, factory painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings (the famous and beautiful 'Monofoil'), carved wheels and numerous plastic details like the cowling, pilot, missiles, prop and more, depending on the kit. Assembly was by detailed, illustrated plans. The F6F features die-cut blue painted balsa parts, a perfect Monofoil wing, carved fuselage block, stringers and dowels as required, completely finished wheels and metal hardware, plastic cowling/engine face, plastic propeller and pilot bust, clear vacuform canopy (still in mint condition, clear and not yellowed), rubber motor, sandpaper, full color decals, covering material and full instructions. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and paperwork present.

Revell Bell P-39 Airacobra - 'S' Issue, 1/45, H222-89

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

Sold

1955 'S' issue and a very nice kit for that time in near 1/48 scale. Features very fine recessed and raised panel lines, detailed pilot figure and optional position cockpit door and a belly drop tank. Molded in beautiful high-gloss olive drab and clear with the Revell 'Globe' base. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The box is in amazing 'near mint' condition with incredible color and gloss, four solid corners, no tape (other than the original factory sealing tape), no torn or missing litho and no creases. Flaws include very minor edge wear, a pen circle with an "OK" over the "S" on the left short side and other very light and isolated wear. Richard Kishady did the famous painting for this kit and originally included German kill markings on the nose of the P-39. Very shortly after this, Revell began to export kits to Europe and many European countries had banned the swastika - so the box art was changed to Japanese kill markings, which is this issue.

Sold

1950s/early 1960s stick-and-tissue flying model. Features quality balsa printwood, strip stock, formed wheels, covering material and full plans. The kit has never been started and is complete. The entire Comet 1950s "N" line included the following (gaps mean there is no kit, at least at that time): N1 Tiger Shark P-40, N2 F-86D Sabre Jet, N4 Globe Swift, N6 Taylorcraft, N8 F-51 Mustang, N9 Helicopter, N11 Ryan Navion, N12 Firefly, N15 Piper Cub, N16 Fokker DVII, N17 Spad, N24 Phantom Fury, N25 Aeronca K (floats) and N26 Stinson SR-7. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Western Allied Products San Francisco Cable Car, 1/32

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very rare and dated 1946. This is a large, scale model of an early Cable Car and measures 11 inches long when assembled. Features fully factory cut hard-wood parts, beautiful routed passenger benches, perfectly die-cut cardstock clerestory roof pieces, wood stock as required, printed clear sheet for grates and decorative corner moldings, full decals and a superb sheet of full size plans that includes detailed text instructions. Although the kit comes with trucks that you assemble, it mentions that you can purchase some O Scale trucks to use on the model. That would work if you choose them carefully; however, the kit is 1/32 scale overall. Never started. Inventoried and NOTE: missing one round wooden wheel; the other 7 are present. Very easily made from flat round stock or cut from a sheet. Otherwise includes all other parts, decals, printed clear plastic and plans in 'excellent' condition. Western Allied Products Co. was located at 605 Old County Road, San Carlos California. It seems that they were probably making other items and decided to get into the model kit business, possibly because of the popularity of the Hudson Miniatures 1/16 scale kits. From the text on the instructions, it appears that this Cable Car is their first kit. It mentions that they were in the process of developing other kits and wanted to hear from modelers. However, no other Western Allied kits have been spotted to date.
