Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Cleveland Bayles Gee Bee Sportster - 1931 Thompson Trophy Race Winner - Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, M-17

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$75

This is a Cleveland scale flying model in the agreed museum scale of 1/16. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete for the time and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and much more. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

With detailed instructions and drawings with aircraft history and a large, colorful American Airlines decal sheet. Never started. The small parts envelope is still factory sealed. Monogram Japanese Submarine I-19 - With Glen Seaplane - (ex Aurora), 1/275, 3103

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$68

From the original Aurora molds. The I-19 is famous for firing history's most successful torpedo spread off Guadalcanal. On September 14, 1942, I-19 was patrolling of the Solomons when the crew made visual contact with American forces. After working into position, she fired a 6 torpedo spread; three hit and sank the US Carrier CV-7 Wasp and the remaining three exploded against the BB North Carolina and the destroyer O'Brien. The destroyer sank and the North Carolina was under repair until November 16, 1942. The I-19's Glen seaplane also flew night reconnaissance on February 23, 1942 over Pearl Harbor for the planned second attack by Emily flying boats on that base. She was depth-charged and sunk by DD-446 Radford on 11.25.43, off Makin Island. This large scale kit is almost 16 inches long when assembled. It is an excellent model for that time from Aurora's improved quality and detail efforts of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Aurora knew that the older kits were outclassed and cut a new series of better molds including several ships, helos and subs. The result was higher mold quality and very good detail, such as this kit. Features full hull with excellent molded detail, deck with proper molded-in wood planking, complete propeller & rudder detail, periscope and cranes, Glen seaplane, conning tower, deck guns and more. Includes a display stand. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried and includes all plastic parts and photocopied instructions. NOTE: missing decal and the original instructions.

Cleveland Curtiss Hawk P-6E - 23.6 Inch Wingspan Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-21

Vaccuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$165

This is a late 1930s/early 1940s 'Deluxe Edition' of this Cleveland SF ('Scale Flying') model in museum scale of 1/16. This exact model is one of the finest examples that I have seen. It has a 'Very Good+' condition box, includes all of the original internal cardboard presentation material, glass bottles of liquids (glue and dope) and is never started and complete. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Because it is the deluxe version, it comes with a set of four large glass bottles of factory fluids - paint/dope and glue - still factory sealed in brown paper and factory tape, very high quality balsa printwood and pre-cut strip wood, balsa blocks, other wood and metal stock as required, completely finished wheels, black fiber propeller blades, a small paper envelope with smaller parts inside, clear material for the canopy and covering material. Includes Cleveland's highest quality plans. Never started and it has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. Dyna-Model Lockheed P-38 Lightning - Wood and Metal Model Aircraft, 1/48

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$115

In the 'Golden Age of Aviation Modeling' (1930s and '40s), most modelers built the flying 'stick and tissue' type kits with rubber, CO2 or gas power. But there were a small but measurable percent that built solid aircraft display models of great detail. This required great skill worthy of the shipbuilders of old, especially considering the limited technology. Many manufacturer's kits consisted of blocks of wood and a plan - the famous (or infamous) 'Make Wood Look Like Plane' kits. A few, like Dyna-Model Products Company, attempted to provide true-scale static models with a high level of detail. Today Dyna-Models are legendary and sought after collectibles. When you first open the kit, you see a black and white cardstock display with all the needed jigs and templates for assembly. Underneath, the fuselage and twin booms are rough carved to ~95% of final shape (not just profile cut) and all other parts are either profile (2D) or die cut. Includes color decals, full size high-quality plans and the crowning jewel, two boxes of finished metal castings (48 fittings in all) for super detailing your aircraft. Never started and complete.
