Yellow Cat Japanese Navy Particular Type 4 Motor Launch Ka-Tsu, 1/35, 35027

Resin Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very, very rare and highly detailed model cast in high definition resin. Never started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions. From tanks-encylopedia.com: The special Type 4 Ka-Tsu was designed with the Solomon Islands campaign in mind, as a versatile amphibious tractor of large capacity. It was also usable as a landing craft and supply carrier carried on the deck of submarines, but this imposed a perfect sealing of the final drives and engine compartment, capable of sustaining deep water pressure. The whole idea of a supply carrier, which came as a priority in 1943, was to avoid detection of the ever-present US submarine "wolf packs", which operated much in the same way the German U-boats did in the Atlantic, and with the same success. They contributed much more to the starvation and lack of vital supplies for every Japanese garrison in the Pacific than all the air attacks combined. Any naval vessel was at risk. Therefore, the need of supply submarines was made ever more important. The Ka-Tsu registered naturally itself as a concrete solution to the problem, in a quick and efficient way. A surfaced sub loaded with cargo would have taken hours to unload, exposing it and its crew to American spotters at any moment. When the Ka-Tsu production run was finished, they were completed as torpedo carriers, in order to attack the US fleet in well-guarded atolls, such as Ulithi. Five IJN submarines, the I-36, I-38, I-41, I-44, and I-53 were modified to carry two vehicles each. However, the numerous deficiencies of the Ka-Tsu were pointed out in preparation of Operation Yu-Go, the Attack on the Majuro atoll, which never took place. Major issues included the sheer weight of the top-mounted torpedoes, combined with the largely empty hull, which caused major stability issues, the severely underpowered engine and the time needed to unseal the watertight engine covers. The atoll entrance was indeed naturally protected and surrounded by impassable reefs for any boat/sub, but not for an amphibious vehicle which could be released by a sub at some safe distance. The vehicles were found abandoned in the Home Islands in late 1945, in Kure harbor (which was pounded and strafed mercilessly in preparation for Operation Olympic). The navy staff also thought to use the Ka-Tsu as a suicide craft if the invasion would have taken place.

AV Models Aichi F1A1, 1/72, AV001

Resin Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

The F1A1 was a Japanese Navy Experimental Observation Seaplane from the 1930s. The Navy tested three aircraft for the specific role of ship-based, catapult spotter aircraft: the Aichi F1A1, Mitsubishi F1M1 and Kawanishi F1K1. The competition was based on the ability to function from a warship, perform spotting duties and also have high enough speed, agility and gunpower to clear the skies of enemy aircraft. Although the Aichi F1A1 was superior in performance, the Kawanishi aircraft was chosen instead. The kit is beautifully molded in high definition resin and includes cast metal details. Never started. The small parts parts are still in the internal factory sealed bag; the larger parts are not sealed and inventoried complete. Includes decals and instructions.

Aurora Grumman F9F Panther - 1st Brooklyn Issue, 1/48, 22

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+++

Sold

Rare 1st issue from 1952 in the one-piece flip top box. 100% original and correct. The model is molded in the correct gloss dark blue with a clear square 'Brooklyn' stand, stand arm and canopy. Being the first issue, the model does not significant rivet detail, nor was it molded with landing gear or missiles. The entire kit is 13 parts including the stand and stand arm. The instructions are the correct early small Brooklyn version with very minor bug damage. Decals are correctly marked 'The Tatem Company' and are in excellent condition with some curl and minimal yellowing. The box is one of the better I have seen. It is intact - there are no missing parts and no repairs. As is typical with this issue, the fragile box has some small tears, creases and edge wear as shown. In summary, a 100% correct, never started and complete kit for the advanced collector of Aurora or military aircraft models. This kit must be shipped insured. Kit History: In the early 1950s Aurora was making children's toys. Since they were always looking for new avenues of business, the three founders were interested in the new fad of 'plastic models'. They were shown the Hawk F-90 and F9F kits in 1/48, and the rest is history. Aurora copied the F9F and F-90 to issue their very first plastic kits. The boxes were two color one-piece flip top boxes of very thin cardboard; they damaged so easily that the kits were immediately reissued in the more familiar 'hardbox' of a litho slick glued to heavy cardboard.

It is not general knowledge that the Belgian aeronautical industry was one of the most advanced in the world by the end of the 1930s. Alfred Renard, the Belgian aviation designer, set out ot make a fighter that would be comparable with the best designs available in 1936. The result of his work was the R.36 driven by a Hispano-Suiza 12 cylinder engine. It flew for the first time in November 1937. The follow-on designs were the R.37 with a Ghome-Rhone engine and the R.38 with a Rolls-Royce Merlin II. This twin engine R42 was based on his R.40 high-altitude interceptor with the Merlin II engine. The R42, the subject of this kit, was was his most advanced design, being an all-metal fighter with four 20mm cannons in the wings, pressurized twin cockpits and ejection seats.
