Boucher 100 Foot Harbor Tugboat With Machine Carved Hull, 1/96

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Very rare, especially in this condition. Boucher was one of the earliest successful high-quality model companies in the USA. It was founded in 1905 Horace E. Boucher, a French-born naval architect employed by U.S. Navy Department and head of the Navys model shop in Washington. Boucher kits were prized posessions at that time and naval museums displayed built versions - there are more than 40 Boucher kits in the Smithsonian alone. Boucher pioneered the mass production of cast metal fittings and selling full kits to the general public. Some credit him with starting the infant model industry in the United States that grew to prominence in the 1950s. At the very least, he took what had been the hobby of a tiny handful of skill crafts man and made it into a hobby that almost anyone could enjoy. This is a wonderful model featuring a stunning hardwood fully carved full hull, other wood stock are required, clear material for the pilothouse, the correct factory box of fittings (a miniature of the large box) stamped "100 Ft Harbor Tug Boat, " full text instructions that are very detailed for that time and full size plans. The actual ship measures 13 inches long when assembled. The kit has never been started. All the fittings except the screw are still factory sealed in small wax paper bags. All non-factory sealed parts are complete with paperwork.

Sterling Stearman PT-17 Kaydet Dusts Crops in Flight - 22 Inch Wingspan for R/C / Control Line / Free Flight, A2

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Very nicely produced stick-and-tissue model that actually releases 'crop dust' in flight. Can be flown with rubber, electric or gas control line or converted to RC with modern lightweight systems. Features high quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood and spars, fully formed wire landing gear struts, finished wheels, other wood and metal stock as required, light plastic engine, exhaust and pilot bust, clear dual die-cut windscreens, rubber motor, plastic prop, a big set of decals, covering tissue and excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. Never started. The kit has been inventoried complete with all parts, decals and plans. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they had the action features and included everything needed to complete the model.

In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.
