Very rare 'Aurora Line' logo version from 1954-1957. This is actually the 3rd release of this kit and is the first issue of the Panther from the West Hempstead factory. Correctly high gloss deep blue and clear plastic, landing gear and rockets and the large, clear rectangle stand and stand arm. The instructions show this correct rectangle-based stand and are dated 1956 with the oval 'Famous Fighters' logo (which is certainly one of the first appearances of this logo, proving that it came out at the end of 1956). The decals are also correct for this issue. They are marked 'Tatem Company' and were issued without a stand decal. Never started and 100% complete with all correct parts, stand, decals and instructions present.

This kit is part of Sterling's expensive big-wingspan series that was designed for action - it actually launches rockets in flight. It can be built to fly on rubber power, gas control line or R/C and also includes numerous extra parts for control line operation or free-flight. Very nicely produced stick-and-tissue model that features high quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood and spars, fully formed wire landing gear struts, finished wheels, other wood and metal stock as required, many light plastic detail parts, vacuformed plastic canopy, rubber motor, plastic propeller, a big set of decals, coving tissue and excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. Never started. The small parts are still factory sealed in the "STERLING" bag, and the parts that were never sealed are inventoried complete with all paperwork and decals in rare 'excellent+' condition with slight yellowing as the only flaw. Please note that some die-cut parts have been very neatly adult punched out - mainly wing ribs- but there is no assembly. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe models.

In the 'Golden Age of Aviation Modeling' (1930s and '40s), most modelers built the flying 'stick and tissue' type kits with rubber, CO2 or gas power. But there were a small but measurable percent that built solid aircraft display models of great detail. This required great skill worthy of the shipbuilders of old, especially considering the limited technology. Many manufacturer's kits consisted of blocks of wood and a plan - the famous (or infamous) 'Make Wood Look Like Plane' kits. A few, like Dyna-Model Products Company, attempted to provide true-scale static models with a high level of detail. Today Dyna-Models are legendary and sought after collectibles. When you first open the kit, you see a black and white cardstock display with all the needed jigs and templates for assembly. Underneath, the fuselage is rough carved to ~95% of final shape (not just profile cut) and all other parts are either profile (2D) or die cut. Includes color decals, full size high-quality plans and the crowning jewel, a box of finished metal castings for super detailing your aircraft. Never started and inventoried complete.
