Pyro Natchez Mississippi River Packet, 1/160, B238-800

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

$145

Rare hardbox issue from the mid 1960s. Very large and highly detailed model measures over 21 inches long when assembled. The Natchez was the famous rival of the Robert E Lee. The race between the two is considered a classic tale of The River. Although the Lee won, the circumstances were suspect and many people still considered the Natchez the fastest paddle-wheel packet ever. (For example, the Lee carried no payload and the Natchez was carrying passengers and a normal payload.) Molded in high-gloss tan, burgundy, green and gray plastic. All details of the real ship, including the wooden railings and carvings are duplicated. Includes full rigging instructions and thread. Never started. All the parts that were originally factory sealed are still in the factory sealed bags; the few parts that Pyro did not seal (paddles, hull and large deck parts) have been inventoried complete. With instructions, decals and flag sheet. Please note that while the box has heavy moisture/water damage, the decals, flag sheet and instructions (as well as all plastic parts) escaped damage and are 'excellent.'

The model includes spoked wheels, chassis with steering linkage, gas tank and suspension details, full engine, removable hood, complete interior and parts molded in color, clear and chrome plated plastic. UPC 105MM Howitzer And Emplacement, 1/40, 5152-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG

$39

Still factory sealed and rare. Judging only from the box art, I would guess that this is the from the Revell "S" 1950s molds. If so, here are the features: gun barrel swivels, elevates and has recoil action, wheels turn with flexible tires, trails fold inward for towing, 4 G.I. figures, shells, crates and detailed 'battle-ground' base. UPC stood for Universal Powermaster Corporation which was based out of New York City, NY. UPC did not cut their own molds, but bought kits already molded from other manufacturers and re-boxed the kits in the USA. Scott Eidson, the famous artist best known for his artwork with Revell, also did UPC box art in the 1960s. All UPC production ended in the 1970s.

There are 10 pages of superb painting instructions and drawings show the colors on the rocket, removable display nozzles (other models don't even include nozzles), vacuum form baseplate that shows the excellent surface detail on the bottom of the rocket, vacuum form antenna panels, precision cut cardboard centering rings for a strong and lightweight rocket that fits together perfectly, Kevlar shock cords, high strength rip-stop nylon parachutes (24-inch and 36-inch diameter chute, which brings your model down nice and slow after a rip-roaring launch), 1/4 inch launch lugs, RockSim design file so you can pick which motors you'd like to fly, and to determine how well the rocket will perform with those motors and CP location charts, to show you how to balance the rocket if you choose the "spinning" model launch system. Never started and all parts that were factory sealed are still in the factory sealed bags; the parts that were never factory sealed have been inventoried complete with decals and CDs which include the extensive instructions.

Very light wear and edge wear are the only significant flaws. Aurora really went out of the way to make this a special kit; however, it did not sell well and was retired after one year. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts present and includes decals and instructions. The instructions sheets are both in 'near mint' condition and the decal sheets are both completely flat with the typical age yellowing as the only significant flaw.

Hawk Curtiss Racer R3C-1 - One Piece Box Issue 1949 - (R3C1), 1/48, 600

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc++

$125

For the advanced collector. This is a model kit with a fascinating history as it may be among the very first injection molded kits produced in the United States (please see the article about early USA kit production on this website). The Hawk model company was the most innovative in America and had been making constant 1/48 scale models in wood and metal since the late 1920s. During the re-run of the World's Fair in 1933, Hawk may have made the world's first injection molded airplanes models - but they were not kits. The models were completely finished and were on display for the princely sum of $25 each. The Mates brothers, who founded and ran Hawk, were quick to incorporate this new technology by adding injection molded details to the wooden kits in the late 1930s. During the war, Hawk put it's injection molding knowledge to work making ID models for the US Armed Forces. Originally there was a nation-wide program to have children and adults make these from wood, but consistency was an issue - injection molded solved this problem. Immediately after WWII in 1946, Hawk made the Curtiss Racer model injection molded in black tenite. The box was a simple one-color affair. This kit, like Varney's PT-17, met a very cool reception at hobby shops. Hawk quickly changed the box to two colors, added box artwork and molded the kit in bright yellow acetate. That was the second issue, still from 1946. By 1948/49 Hawk was using injection molded styrene plastic and still molding it in high-gloss yellow - that is this kit, the third issue. Other than the material, there are subtle changes to the box. It is still one piece but much larger, has much simpler (and larger) text on the end flaps and the box top says "All Plastic Airplane Assembly Kit" (instead of "...Construction Kit"). The box is in remarkable 'excellent++' condition with great colors, no creases, rips or tears, no splits and all 6 flaps present and 100% attached. The box has not been crushed or flattened, which is unusual as it was not very strong. Inside, the kit has never been started and has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The instructions are in excellent condition. Please note that Hawk did not issue decals with this issue of this kit.
