Air Lines Bristol 138/A, 1/72, 9802

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$36

Very nicely done kit in the Frog tradition. On the 28th of September, 1936, the Bristol 138/A climbed to an altitude of 49,967 feet to establish a new world altitude record. In 1937 it climbed to 53,967 feet where the windscreen cracked. The pilot was saved by the pressure suit he was wearing. The kit has no assembly but NOTE that the fuselage has been very very lightly airbrushed. There is no other painting. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. Box art is by the famous Jo Kotula who did 1930s covers for the magazine 'Model Airplane News' and later the Aurora box art of the late 1950s. Air Lines kits are all Frog molds that the Lines Brothers imported to the USA between 1964-1966. The kits, decals and instructions were made in England, then imported to the USA where Testors created the boxes with the colorful trading cards on the back. There are one or two trading cards on each box which show the boxart but not the advertising/logo. Some kits contain a Testors color painting guide also, but it is not specific to any model.

This aircraft was an adaptation of the P-36 fighter with the liquid-cooled Allison V-1710-C7 12 cylinder engine installed. A turbo-supercharger was installed, and this aircraft achieved an impressive 340 mph at 20,000 feet in 1937. However, it suffered from frequent turbo-supercharger failures. An order for 13 service aircraft followed on December 11, 1937. The first service models delivered between April 29 1939 and December 5, 1939 were designated YP-37. All aircraft suffered from mechanical problems, and the US Army Air Force discontinued all further development.

Airfix Short Sunderland - Craftmaster Issue, 1/72, 1-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed NM+

$44

SALE!! Still factory sealed and in investment-grade 'near mint+' condition. The box has incredible Craftmaster artwork. A merchant ship is sinking on the left and the crew is in lifeboats in the foreground on lower side panel. The Sunderland is preparing to rescue them, while the other Sunderland depth-charges the U-boat responsible for the sinking. The Sunderland's 21-year record with the RAF has made it a legend. Derived from the Empire Class Flying Boat Airliners, Sunderland IIIs had a top speed of 210 mph and an endurance of 12 hours. These qualities made the Sunderland a superb platform for North Sea and North Atlantic patrols, ASW and SAR. Crews usually loved the airplane; its large size afforded many airborne comforts that bomber or fighter crews could only dream of, such as bunk, a head and an area for food preparation. Kit features beaching gear, rotating turrets with elevating guns, movable control surfaces, external bomb load and rotating props.
