Berkeley is a very famous manufacturer of flying model kits from the Golden Age of flying aviation, about 1932-1954. Founded in 1933 by William Effinger, the company was quite progressive in producing quality kits - it was likely the Berkeley 'Buccaneer' was the first gas powered model in kit form. In the later 1930s, Effinger acquired the services of a very talented Henry Struck. Struck went on to design numerous award-winning kits under the Berkeley name. Berkeley weathered the post WWII recession and emerged as a major kit producer in the late 1940 and 1950s. These were great years for Berkeley and they produced some incredible and large kits. The company went bankrupt in about 1960 however. Fox engines (Duke Fox) bought the company and released the kits alongside his own FOX models and engines. This arrangement did not last, and in the early 1960s the Berkeley name disappeared from hobby shop shelves.

Sold

1954 early issue molded in light blue plastic. This kit has never been started. It has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

This model is well detailed and the box states that it can be converted to a 'road racing' or slot car. Has optional soft top 'up' or boot for the top 'down'. Never started. Guillows Curtiss Robin 1930s Sport plane - 24 inch Wingspan RC/CL/Rubber Powered Kit, 305

Includes excellent full size plans with detailed instructions. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

KVZ Lufthansa Turbinen Baade 152 Airliner - Built - No Box, 1/100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: No Box

Sold

Very rare. This is a built up KVZ Baade 152 kit that was factory painted silver and dark blue. The factory paint is in excellent condition and the decals have been neatly applied. The kit is complete with all parts. The kit was at one time neatly built with very little glue. As a result, most parts have come cleanly apart. The fuselage halves still have the locating pins and holes and the fit is excellent. One horizontal stabilizer is intact, the other has the locating tab broken off. The two tip tanks and engine pods are neatly assembled. The engine pylons have two of the four locating pins still remaining. One wing is intact; the other wing has a 2 inch by 1/4 inch section missing on the inboard end (photo). Both main and nose struts are complete with locating pins, and all 10 wheels are complete. The KVZ antenna material is present but was never put on the model. This is an aircraft with a very interesting history. In 1952, German Aircraft Engineers (some from Junkers) working in Russia had developed a design for a twin engine bomber known as 150. The engineers were returned to what was now East Germany, and headed by former Junkers designer Brunolf Baade, they designed the 152. Initially the Soviets showed interest, as did other Warsaw Pact countries. The program suffered early on from economic and material issues. The delay resulted in 152 V1 rolling out in 1958. During the second test flight, the crashed about 3 miles short of the runway, killing all on board. The cause for the crash was never released. The next two prototypes were completed with modifications and the second one flew. By this time (1961) the Russians and other Pact countries showed no interest, and the program was halted. This was the end of all GDR aircraft construction.
