ITC Savoia-Marchetti S-55 Flying Boat - Ringo Issue, 1/96, C548-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

The first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic in formation! The S-55 was a unique aircraft with the passenger compartments in the floats and the cockpit in the wing; the two engines are mounted in tandem push/pull above the cockpit. The S-55 proved to be very reliable and airworthy, setting 14 world records for speed, altitude and distance with a payload. Three months before Lindbergh's solo Atlantic flight, and S-55 flew with stops from Italy to Rio and NY City. In 1933 Marshal Balbo led 25 S-55s to Chicago in about 48 hours. He then flew back without incident. This is from the original ITC molds. Ringo was in charge of cleaning out ITC inventory when ITC quit the model business. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete including and instructions. Please note that most Ringo kits did not come with decals - this kit is no exception.

Revell Hawaiian Pilot C3 Freighter 'S' Kit, 1/400, H315-169

All larger parts are inventoried complete and the kit includes the instructions, decals and flag sheet. I believe that the Matson Line Hawaiian Pilot originally started life as the Navy USS Burleigh C-3 Transport. After the was she became the Oceanic lines SS Sonoma (#2). On July 14, 1953, Hawaiian Pilot collided with SS Jacob Luckenbach (another C-3 freighter, ex-Sea Robin), off San Francisco. Luckenbach sank in 30 minutes; the crew was safely transferred to Hawaiian Pilot and there was no loss of life.
