Minicraft 1804 Trevithick The World's First Steam Locomotive, 1/38, 11102

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

$49

From ex-Entex molds. The world's first locomotive was the 1804 Trevithick. On February 13 of that year, Richard Trevithick's high pressure steam locomotive pulled five wagons carrying 10 tons of iron and 70 men on the Penydaren Tramroad from Methyr to Abercynon, Wales. The nine miles was covered in four hours and five minutes but much time was lost cutting down several trees and removing some large rocks. At times they reached the unheard of speed of five miles per hour! The performance won a 500 Pound wager for the train's owner, Mr. Samuel Homfrey and proved for once and for all that smooth steel wheels could obtain traction on a smooth iron rail. Until this day, conventional wisdom insisted that only geared wheels running on geared track would be able to pull any load up the slightest grade. The model is from 1996 but the molds pre-date that. Older but very nice kit that is well detailed and molded in wood brown, medium gray and black. Includes display stand. The kit has never been started. The plastic parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags; the metal parts have been inventoried and NOTE: missing one round shaft. Easily made from round stock. Includes instructions.

$110

Highly prefabricated kit made from Solid Western Pine - not balsa wood. Makes a very impressive display model when built. Includes precut and shaped fuselage, wings, elevators, rudder and nacelles, a bag of sealed detail parts including propellers, wheels, etc, envelopes of wood filler and glue, sandpaper, detailed instructions and drawings with aircraft history and a large, colorful American Airlines decal sheet. Never started. 100% complete with all parts and plans. NOTE: the box is only fair. The ends are heavily taped and the tape extends onto the box top and bottom. It is graded 'fair', not collectible but an ideal builder as the parts and paperwork are all in very good condition. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - usually only a quick sanding would finish them.

Aurora German Sea Raider Atlantis 'The Rattlesnake of the Ocean', 1/456, 710-249

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$765

First issue. The hardbox is dated 1959 and has 'Famous Fighters' in the oval border of the logo, with 'Aurora' over the 'Northern Lights.' Dramatic Jo Kotula artwork. This is the only model ever made of the famous (or infamous) German WWII converted merchant raider which was the subject of several books and a major movie called 'Under Ten Flags'. The long WWII voyage was legendary, and the ship is well represented in this full hull model. Covers can be removed to reveal hidden guns, torpedo tubes and the Ar-196 float plane. The box has four solid corners, no repairs and 'very good' gloss and color - there is wear as shown, especially at the corners. The model has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Shipping insurance is required. From modeler Stephen Payne: Recommend that the builder or collector of this kit add the following books to their collection-The German Raider Atlantis by Captain Bernhard Rogge & Wolfgang Frank & Sea Raider Atlantis, Story of a German Surface Raider by Ulrich Mohr & A.V. Sellwood. The first book is by the ATLANTIS commander, Kapitan zur See Bernhard Rogge. He oversaw the transformation and outfitting in Bremen and captained the ship during her 602 day operational voyager which sank or captured 22 ships totaling 144,384 t (142,104 long tons). Rogge also was one of the few German officers of flag rank who was not arrested by the Allies after the war due to the way he had exercised his command of Atlantis. Captain J. Armstrong White, captain of the British CITY OF BAGHDAD, which Atlantis sank in July 1941, stated, "His treatment of prisoners left respect, instead of hatred."The second book is by the ATLANTIS First Officer, Ulrich Moher. Both books read much the same as the events related are the same, but it is interesting to see these events from the two perspectives. Captain White (see above) wrote the foreword to Atlantis, the Story of a German Surface Raider, written by U. Mohr & A. V. Sellwood. The German auxiliary cruiser Atlantis (HSK 2), known to the Kriegsmarine as Schiff 16 (SHIP 16) and to the Royal Navy as Raider-C, was a converted merchant vessel to German Hilfskreuzer (auxiliary cruiser) used for commerce raiding. Commerce raiders did not seek to engage warships, but rather attack enemy merchant shipping; the measures of success are tonnage destroyed (or captured) and time spent "at large" holding up enemy resources. Atlantis had the longest raiding career of any German commerce raider in either world war.

Marlin Chemical and Ladder American Firefighters, 1/48, 101 FC

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$125

Very rare. In 1952 Marlin Toy Company of New York City, New York entered the plastic model business. The Revell 'Highway Pioneers' were making a huge impact on the hobby industry and the timing seemed perfect. Marlin first cut the molds in 1952 and issued the six original American Firefighters -Chemical and Ladder, Steamer, Hook and Ladder, Water Tower, Aerial Ladder and Hose Reel. The boxes were identical as a cost saving measure - similar to the Revell Highway Pioneers. Revell signed a marketing agreement with Marlin in 1953. Five of the kit were released with the Revell name and marketing name 'Collectors Kits, Closter N.J.' Revell added the horse parts as they were not originally part of the Marlin issues. The kits made excellent display pieces, but they never caught the imagination of young men like jet aircraft did. The five molds were shipped to Brazil. After a run for Kikoler (Revell Brazil's Distributor), they were shipped back to the USA but the molds were lost at sea. This is an original Marlin kit and contains the Chemical and Ladder. Molded in dark red and yellow. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.

After the war, Lindberg and Olsen had a strong hand in early United States injection molded kit development. Please see the article located on this website about early USA plastic kit manufacturers.
