Aurora Cessna 310, 1/62, 283-50

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM++

Sold

1963 issue from ex-Comet molds. The box is in stunning 'Near Mint++' investment-grade condition with amazing color and gloss. Neatly molded with all recessed panel lines, clear side and front windows, tip tanks, rotating propellers, display stand and full pinstripe decals. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. Aurora had started a line of inexpensive 29 cent kits in about 1957. The line was a success, and it was expanded. The line grew again when Aurora purchased the Comet molds, as most of Comet's line was very small scale kits, many of them civil aircraft like this one. It appears that Aurora was encouraged by the sale of the ex-Comet civil aircraft, as it expanded the line with it's own molds in the early 1960s.

Aurora Aero Commander 680, 1/81, 285-29

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

First Aurora release (29 cent price extension) from ex-Comet molds. 1963 issue. This kit has never been started. NOTE: missing one flat side window. Can be easily made; I have included thick, clear plastic that can be used to make a replacement. Otherwise inventoried with all other parts, decals and instructions. The box is only 'Good' due to black residue on the top right and side panels. The Aero Commander was a state-of-the-art twin engine light transport from the early 1960s. It was built by Aero Design and Engineering Co. of Bethany, Oklahoma. It was the first twin engine aircraft to be used by the President of the United States and served in this capacity in the early 1960s. This high performance 5 to 7 place was popular with business travelers and had a range of 1,050 miles and a ceiling of 22,000 feet. The Aero Commander led to the Jet Commander, which became the IAI 1121 through 1124 Westwind business jets. Aero Commanders can still be seen at some airports in excellent condition, but many are neglected as newer aircraft are in favor.

Aurora Piper Aztec C, 1/72, 282-70

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Sold

1968 issue and still the only injection molded Aztec kit. After Aurora purchased the Comet molds, they reissued the Comet civil light aircraft line. It appears that Aurora may have been inspired by the Comet kits or sales of the reissues, and they produced several more new molds to add to the line. This Aztec is one of those kits. Since the kit was designed new, it has significantly more detail than the older Comet kits. Features all recessed panel lines, full interior with a sofa, four seats and instrument panel, optional position landing gear and rotating propellers. The kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions. NOTE: box is complete and solid but graded only 'fair' because the litho is lifting off the cardboard and their are dirt stains. The parts, instructions and decals are 'excellent'.

The parts are either still in the factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hanger, ambulance, sound locator, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Cleveland Republic SeaBee Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-88

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business - Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter - Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Pe-2s served successfully as level bombers, dive bombers, ground attack, reconnaissance and even as fighters if need be. Post war saw use of the Pe-2 in a few Warsaw Pact air forces.
