Hawk F-84F Thunderstreak - One-Piece Box Issue, 1/72, 606

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

$46

Rare early issue Hawk kit in the flip-top box. Hawk was a manufacturer of 1/48 constant scale solid wooden models well before plastic, but they jumped on the plastic band wagon very early. Most of the first issue 'flip box' plastic kits were 1/48 - this kit, however, is one of the earlier 1/72 scale kits from Hawk. The kit is molded in the correct silver with the early style stand and correct instructions and decals. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Thanks to Jean-Claude who told me that the boxart shows a standard F-84F but in reality the model inside is of prototype YF-96A, (aka YF-84F), s/n 49-2430. this aircraft was later modified to become the YRF-84F parasite fighter in combination with GRB-36F.It is on display at the USAF Museum, Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio.

Maircraft Heinkel He-51 - Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S9

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

$34

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 80% cut, profile cut parts, printwood and a small bag of details. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions.

Revell 1953 MG TD Highway Pioneers - Series 4, 1/32, H50-69

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM

$49

1954 original issue of the famous Highway Pioneers. This kit is in very rare investment-grade 'near mint' condition. It is from original hobby shop stock that has never been for retail sale until now. Inside, the kit is nice as it is outside. It is never started, and all the parts are still sealed in the factory 'krinkle' bag. With instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Hawk Supermarine Swift, 1/72, 607

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$24

Very cleanly molded kit that builds very nicely. The model has excellent fit and recessed and raised panel lines. Can be assembled with or without landing gear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The Swift was a very early jet fighter to replace the Supermarine Attacker. A very capable aircraft, the Swift suffered numerous accidents early on. As a result, less than 200 were ever built and it did not see combat. It did hold a world speed record for a short time, only to have a Douglas Skyray take the record a few hours later. The problems were ironed out, but by then the Hawker Hunter was proving very capable and there was no need for the Swift and it's RAF service life was short. The most successful version was the PR variant.
