Sterling F4U-5 Corsair Launches Rockets in Flight - 24 inch Wingspan for RC - (F4U5), A14-398

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

24 inch wingspan kit for RC, free flight or control line. Includes innovative system for automatically firing wing mounted rockets in flight. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occured in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits as they featured color decals, high-grade die cut balsa, vacuform plastic detail parts, clear vacuform canopy, plastic wheels (if required), finished wire landing gear, rubber motor and plastic prop, full size plans with instruction details and full instructions for conversion to RC or control line. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Guillows Guillows Air-Pro Folding Wing Glider Store Display and Balsa Wood Flying Gliders

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Very rare complete dealer display and 5 unopened gliders. The Air-Pro was a late 1950s/early 1960s balsa and plastic glider that has folding wings. When launched with the equipped plastic/rubber band launcher, the wings fold and the Air-Pro zooms to about 50 feet high. At that point, the wings fold out for 'glides of hundreds of feet'. The box is in very good condition and has some internal repairs to stabilize it. These repairs are not visible with the gliders inside. The display Air-Pro is complete and in excellent condition - the empty packet for it remain in the box. In the box are 5 mint condition and sealed gliders. A fantastic piece for the advanced wooden flying model collector.

Monogram Speedee-Bilt Spad Pursuit Flying Scale Model Airplane, G8-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+++

Sold

This kit models Capt. Rickenbacker's 94th Squadron aircraft. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like cowlings, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
