Airfix Short Sunderland - Craftmaster Issue, 1/72, 1-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Mint

$66

A remarkable example that is still factory sealed and in mint condition. The 'Hendricks Discount Toys' price tag is still on the right side panel. Incredible Craftmaster artwork. A merchant ship is sinking on the left and the crew is in lifeboats in the foreground on lower side panel. The Sunderland is preparing to rescue them, while the other Sunderland depth-charges the U-boat responsible for the sinking. The Sunderland's 21-year record with the RAF has made it a legend. Derived from the Empire Class Flying Boat Airliners, Sunderland IIIs had a top speed of 210 mph and an endurance of 12 hours. These qualities made the Sunderland a superb platform for North Sea and North Atlantic patrols, ASW and SAR. Crews usually loved the airplane; its large size afforded many airborne comforts that bomber or fighter crews could only dream of, such as bunk, a head and an area for food preparation. Kit features beaching gear, rotating turrets with elevating guns, movable control surfaces, external bomb load and rotating props.

Tan Son Nhut was part of the large combination air base and commercial international airport adjacent to the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon. RB-57E aircraft derived their nickname from their call-sign which was 'Patty Lynn.' There were only four aircraft assigned but each had two rotating air crews. Mission imagery (film) was processed by the 12th Reconnaissance Intelligence Technical Sq, which was also located at the 7th AF HQ complex. Nominally they were assigned to the Huge 460th Tactical Recon Wing, to which the 12th Tactical Recon Sq (RF-4Cs)was also assigned. (Thanks to John Barlow for the history!)

The initial Comet Is were in operation long before the 707, which gave the British an incredible post-war lead in the expanding civil aviation market. Just as the Comet was flying high and orders were pouring in from around the world, Comets began to mysteriously fall out of the sky. Everything from lighting to terrorist bombs were blamed. For months the root cause went undiscovered. Then, in a landmark investigation that is considered the first modern post-crash autopsy, it was discovered that the stresses around a small ADF window on the top of the fuselage were causing metal fatigue failure when the fuselage was pressurized. To confirm this, a Comet I was placed in a water tank and subjected to pressurization stresses. After some time, a dramatic failure occurred. Then parts of a crashed Comet were pulled from underwater proving once and for all that this was the root cause.
