Air Lines Vickers Alcock & Brown Vimy - First Non-Stop Transatlantic Flight (ex-Frog), 1/72, 12901

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

Sold

Very colorful box artwork issue and an excellent kit from Frog molds. Finely molded with separate ailerons, elevator and rudder. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: one lower elevator was slightly short shot, so I also included a Frog lower elevator. Box art is by the famous Jo Kotula who did 1930s covers for the magazine 'Model Airplane News' and later the Aurora box art of the late 1950s. Air Lines kits are all Frog molds that the Lines Brothers imported to the USA between 1964-1966. The kits, decals and instructions were made in England, then imported to the USA where Testors created the boxes with the colorful trading cards on the back. There are one or two trading cards on each box which show the boxart but not the advertising/logo.

StromBecker Chance Vought F7U Cutlass, C49-89

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair+

Sold

Beautiful kit from the 1950s made of quality hardwood - no balsa. The carving is done to the final shape. When complete it makes an impressive model and comes with a unique display stand. Features all carved and smooth wood parts, clear plastic canopy, full color decals, glue, sandpaper and special display stand. Never started. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. Please note that the box has significant wear; ideal builder kit. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - you only had to glue, sand and paint to finish them.

Cleveland Kling's Folkerts Speed King Racer - Balsa Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, 71

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Older issue in the cardboard box with 'Cleveland World Famous Models' printed in silver. From around 1937-1942. This is a Cleveland model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. This kit is specifically designed as a scale model with retractable landing gear. However, if you do wish to fly it, additional instructions are provided on the necessary modifications. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called 'The Aviation Craze' that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest operating single-owner model airplane supply business, called Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviations great Recruiter, Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Cleveland Curtiss P-6E Hawk Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-21

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

From the 1930s. This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. The kit came from a long time collector of 1930s and 1940s models and is in exceptional condition. The kit is in the older cardboard box with 'Cleveland World Famous Models' in silver print. The P-6E was considered a 'flagship' among the single engine 1/16 scale models and this is a fantastic kit. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, covering material, highest quality plans, all parts required for assembly and markings/decals (if issued with the kit). The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. Monogram F-51D (P-51D) Mustang Action Model - Four Star Issue, 1/32, PA77-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

Dated 1962. First issue of this classic 'Action Model' with great detail and mold quality. Features opening canopy to show the highly detailed cockpit, tiny levers under the wings drop 2 bombs, a small knob on the bottom rotates and extends and retracts the main gear and tailwheel; all gear doors including tailwheel open and close automatically with the gear. Not only do these features sound great, but they work. My built kit is over 30 years old and functions like new! Molded in silver, black and clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Please note that the box has damage as shown; there is a close split at the upper left and creases. This kit has an interesting history. In 1961, Monogram introduced the 1/32 scale Phantom Mustang. This was a very ambitious project. The kit was transparent, highly detailed and included two electric motors. One motor raised and lowered the main gear and tail wheel while the other spun the prop. Two small levers on the base dropped bombs from the wings. It was molded in clear, silver, black, red and zinc chromate green. Although successful, the kit was expensive to produce and Monogram charged a hefty retail price of $4.98. As a way to create more revenue from the molds, Monogram cleverly created this kit - using some of the same molds as the Phantom Mustang. The silver parts tree was completely re-cut and does not match the Phantom version. The red stand, gears and motorizing features were simply left out and the model molded in solid colors. The gear retraction/extension features was retained, but not motorized. On the new silver parts tree they added a small knob (placed on the bottom of the wing) and the same for the bomb dropping mechanism. This lowered the price to $1.98 and this additional revenue hopefully helped pay down the original mold costs.

From the 1960s and a reissue of the 1950s kit. Features traditional wood/tissue construction with quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, stripwood, formed wire landing gear, completely preformed wooden wheels, wood stock as required, rubber, tissue and plastic propeller & thrust button. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Airfix Henschel Hs-123 - Type 3 Logo - Bagged, 1/72, 136

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Still factory sealed. 1960s bagged kit with header. The Hs-123 was the Luftwaffe's first in- service dive bomber and was built by the famous locomotive maker Henschel. The '123 had been replaced by the start of WWII by the Stuka, but demand continued for the aircraft and they were of great use in Belgium and France. During the terrible weather of the Russian campaign, the HS-123 once again found itself in demand. When conditions were so bad that other aircraft could not fly, the Hs-123 would often be in the air. The sturdy construction and good flying characteristics made it a favorite among pilots.
