Hudson Miniatures Old 16 Locomobile Racer 1906 Old Timers, 1/16

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Dated December 1950 inside. Large scale and very well detailed for that time. Features numerous die-cut and machined/cut to shape plywood and balsa wood parts, beautiful plastic wheels, steering wheel and other accessories, small brass parts, metal stock and wood as required. Although all of Hudson's 1/16 kits are excellent, this one has even more detail than usual thanks to Hudson's engineers having access to the actual car. This kit has never been started. The small parts are still factory bag sealed while the parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete including two big full-sized sheets of excellent plans and instructions. There is also an fold-out brochure with an extensive history of Old 16, the most famous race car in American history and the first to defeat the European models, winning the Vanderbilt Cup. Please note that one wheel is a different color, but identical to the others. This is not the first time I have seen this happen with Hudson kits. Hudson Miniatures created a very popular line of automobile kits in a constant 1/16 scale shortly after WWII. The kits sold very well...so well that you could argue that Gowland & Gowland borrowed Hudson's subject matter for their ground-breaking 'Highway Pioneers.' The Hudson Miniatures 'Old Timers' even spawned a line of imitators, with Fador's 'Smallster' being one of the better in quality. Sales did drop on the appearance and popularity of the much smaller (and less accurate) Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' in 1951. When the all-injection molded Gowland kits proved not to be a passing fad, Hudson quickly planned and released his own all-plastic, small-scale competition called 'Lil' Old Timers Quickie Kits.' The kits were of excellent quality, but it was too little too late. Additionally, sales of the excellent wooden kits faltered further in the next few years with the introduction of accurate, 1/24 and 1/32 all-plastic cars in the mid 1950s. This forced Hudson to discontinue the wood kits and the plastic line was sold to Revell and subsequently re-released. Today, these excellent, big 1/16 kits are often the only model available of these early automobiles. In the mid 1960s Aurora thought so highly of Hudson Miniatures that they purchased the wood kit assets and released a very small number of these in all-plastic models.

Pyro Monitor United States Ironclad, C258-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Rare early issue of the Monitor alone. Usually this kit is only seen in the release that contains it and the Merrimac. Great hardbox artwork by AJ Rudisill from the late 50s. The Monitor was one of two American Civil war ships that spelled the end of the wooden ship age. In March of 1862, the Merrimac put to sea to raise the Union Blockade off the James River. There she sank the Cumberland and Congress. The Monitor, the Union's only ironclad and the first turret ship, was rushed to the scene. The epic battle between the two iron-clad ships ended in a draw, with the Merrimac suffering a little more damage than the Monitor. The Merrimac was blown up to avoid capture; the Monitor sank in a gale in 1862. The Monitor is 10 inches long when built, is a full hull model and includes a display stand. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Please NOTE: the instructions have a short closed tear and a small stain from old tape (which has fallen off); also, one blade is broke from the prop at the base but the blade is present for an easy repair. Although dated, the Pyro Monitor and Merrimac kits are generally considered superior to the Lindberg models of the same ships.

Comet Phantom Fury - 32 Inch Wingspan Endurance Competition Flying Airplane, 3207-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

1970s reissue of one of the more famous free-flight models of the 1930s. These aircraft were common in the 1930s when the sport of free-flight model airplanes reached it's zenith. It was not uncommon for these models to fly for 45 minutes or more on rubber power alone - many flew out of site, and it became common practice to write your name, address and phone number on the covering tissue. Kit features traditional wood/tissue construction, quality printwood, stripwood and spars, fully formed wheels and thrust button, nose block, covering tissue, rubber motor, propeller and detailed full size plans with building instructions. Never started and inventoried complete. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
