1953 early issue molded in green plastic. This is from the issues produced by Gowland & Gowland as it carrier their 'balloon' logo on the side. This kit has never been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Wood Model Kit, Box Condition: VG
Rare kit from 1957 in very good overall condition. This is a highly prefabricated, rubber-powered, wooden scale flying model kit. It features beautiful, completely finished Monofoil upper and lower wings, die-cut fuselage sides and formers that are factory painted yellow, precarved wooden parts, fully finished wheels, die-cut clear windscreens, plastic engine, prop and pilot bust, fully formed wire landing gear, rubber motor, sandpaper, tissue, decals and excellent instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes 'excellent+' condition decals and instructions. Before there were plastic models, there were wooden aircraft kits. These usually came in two types - solid and stick and tissue. The solid models were static and usually contained a few blocks of balsa and sometimes a detail part or two. These "Make Wood Look Like Plane" models required a very high level of skill in carving and finishing. The stick and tissue variety were slightly easier to build and provided the ultimate thrill - they could fly when complete with rubber power (and later with free-flight gas and eventually RC). They still required a great deal of skill, so manufacturers sought ways to make model building more accessible to everyone. One idea was pre-carving and/or prefabrication. This raised prices, naturally. Many manufacturers launched lines of 'easy' to build flying models but only Monogram succeeded in making an entire line at an affordable price that would actual fly. The original "Speedee-Bilt" kits were in one-piece two-color boxes. In the early 1950s, shortly before plastic kits were available, Monogram changed to the 'hardbox' with a lithographic slick glued to the top as this kit. Speedee-Bilt kits contained die cut and pre painted wooden parts, completely formed airfoil wings, carved wheels and numerous plastic details like engine cowl, pilot, missiles, prop and more. Assembly was by detailed full size plans.

The US Navy WWI Submarine chaser was a 110 foot wooden vessel that carried a crew of 25 and were armed with a 3 lb deck gun and a 'Y' gun for discharging depth charges. The ships proved valuable in combating the German U-boats in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Some were updated and saw service in WWII. This is the large and nicely detailed ex-ITC kit from the 1960s. When ITC discontinued plastic kit production, 'Ringo' was the name give to the 'clearing house' company that cleansed the ITC warehouse of left-over stock. Ringo kits normally did not come with decals or flag sheets - this kit is no exception. The kit has not been started. The small (black) parts are still in the factory sealed bag. SALE!! Read Carefully! This lot includes 15 resin submarines and numerous small parts - many more small parts than there are subs. The collector had perhaps the world's most exhaustive submarine model collection and by his letters knew all the resin manufactures very well; they even sent him prototypes. All 11 subs are high definition resin cast. For example, some are 1/72 Lone Star Models of very early subs and others are 1/700 models of modern SSBNs. In between are some 1/350. All are new and never built but NOTE: I do not know if they are all complete. Some are complete, but some may not be. Included are bags and bags of high quality cast metal parts including numerous props, diving and stern planes, rudders and much more. There are a few frets of PE parts as well. Please NOTE these are sold AS IS and I will not do a detailed inventory. If I were to do so, I would sell them individually for a much higher price. They are cheap because it is an "as-is grab bag." There are NO instructions and documentation of any kind other than the owners notes which often includes the manufacture and sometimes the name of the kit. Many cast metal details are labeled as well (like Lone Star) but some are not.
