Comet Struct-O-Speed Prefabricated Curtiss Robin Flying Aircraft, 2306-100

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

$26

Still factory sealed. Comet would advertise that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top, and it was not a completely idle boast. These kits were very highly prefabricated for their time, and in comparison to the regular stick and tissue models, the claim is not unfounded. Kit features die cut wood, formed and finished wheels, prop, rubber motor and detailed instructions with flying tips. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$22

Nicely detailed kit featuring finely molded raised details, wing machine guns with removable panel, good cockpit and very good gear well detail, opening canopies and rotating propellers. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. Some molds have a colorful history; this one is no exception. At one point, Monogram leased or sold a set of Corsair molds (from the original 4 Star action kit) to Idea in Korea. Idea either made a copy of the molds or modified the molds to fit a tab on each tree with the Idea name. Hobby Craft's kit is the Monogram F-82 with the Idea runner tab; so Idea either copied the molds or modified them. On the outside of many Hobby Craft boxes it says 'Made in South Korea' - obviously Idea is one of the agents who molded kits for HC.

Sterling L-19 Bird Dog - 17 inch Wingspan CL/Rubber Powered Kit that Drops Leaflets in Flight, A12

$55

From the mid 1960s. 17 inch wingspan kit for rubber free flight or control line. Features an innovative system for dropping leaflets in flight. Includes quality die-cut balsa sheet parts, strip wood and spars, light plastic full engine cowl and other parts, die-cut clear windscreen, fully formed wire landing gear struts, finished main and tail wheels, rubber motor and plastic prop, covering tissue, a big sheet of full color decal and full size plans with excellent instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete. Sterling was a famous manufacturer dating back to the 1930/40s flying model craze. Although they continued to produce kits for decades after the flying model slump following World War II, they eventually fell victim to the general lack of interest in modeling that occurred in the early 1980s. I always considered Sterling kits to be deluxe kits compared to other manufacturers.
