Renwal M-50 Ontos - The Thing With The Sting, 1/32, M557-100

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good++

$48

Rare 1950s original issue; not a common reissue. Fantastic first issue 'Blueprint' hardbox artwork and a highly detailed kit featuring 11 parts, combat crew of three, working treads, some interior detail, opening hatches and covers and more. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. The Ontos was a unique vehicle. Ontos is a Greek word for 'The Thing' and the vehicles lives up to that. Developed along a new concept in mobile warfare, the Ontos has little defense other than movement but a very powerful offensive punch. It carries six 106mm recoilless rifles and .50 caliber spotting rifles. The firing sequence went like this: the crew of three would get out and hand-load the six large guns. Then the Ontos would quickly move towards the target. Once sited, the gunner would fire the .50 caliber spotting rifle. This gun fired a different cartridge, a special low velocity round that matched the trajectory of the 106mm. The spotting round was very accurate and made a visible flash on striking the target. Then he could fire a full salvo of 6 or in steps of two. The 8.5 ton vehicle would then speed away, moving to a safe location to reload.

Revell 1903 Cadillac Highway Pioneers, 1/32, H35-79

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$36

1960 issue hardbox with full artwork; Highway Pioneers prior to this year simply had generic artwork and an ink stamped name on the box ends was the only way to identify the contents. This kit has never been started. All parts are still sealed in the factory bag. Includes instructions. The box would rate much higher than 'very good++' but there is age foxing on some of the box side panels. These kits have a fascinating history. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream and never made the top 10 list of boys activities. Spurred on by the nation-wide aviation craze in the 1920s, many became modelers and built flying or static wooden models of airplanes, ships, trains, automotive and other subjects. Basic kits existed, but many of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s when the Gowland & Gowland/Revell Highway Pioneers became the sales sensation of the year. Demand was so great that the factories could not keep up and almost overnight 'model building' was mainstream. The phenomenon of the 'Highway Pioneers' kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles fit the bill: they could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real cars. The success of the Highway Pioneers lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the late 1950s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys...and many adult males too!

AMCO Baku Geki Ki-99 - Japanese Navy Dive Bomber - Official Identification Model Kit Build For Victory - Solid Wood Model From WWII - Comet - (Type 99 Val), 1/72, IA-17

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

$46

1940s WWII wooden kit from AMCO, which was a division of Comet. Features all hardwood parts including blocks & wood stock, sandpaper, CASCO glue, a full size cardstock template and patter sheet and highly illustrated double-sided assembly instructions. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and paperwork present. This is an official identification model. The US Armed Forces found themselves in a World War with almost no ID models. Someone decided that it would be perfect to let the air-minded modeling youth build them for the military, and thus the "Identification Model" was born. However, the idea did not last as the quality ranged from excellent to horrible, with the majority on the later side. A much better substitute was found by casting one-piece models out of a hard rubber plastic. Little did anyone know that this was a foretaste of the doom of the solid wood scale model, which was replaced by plastic in the early 1950s.

Maircraft Bellanca Cruisair - Solid Wood Model Airplane, 1/48, S-5

Vaccuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$32

Maircraft was originally founded in the early or mid 1930s by Gordon Christoph and went by the name Aircraft Model Company. The company produced a typical line of solid 'profile cut' kits that required the usual high talent levels for carving and finishing. A former Comet Model Airplane & Supply Co. salesman, Jack Mair, bought the company in the early 1940s and renamed it Maircraft. This company was one of the handful of solid kit producers who issued models in a consistent 1/48 scale during the 1930s and 1940s (others included Hawk and Dyna-Model). This lead to one of the most desirable and rare model kits ever produced in the USA - the wood/plastic 1/48 United DC-3 model issued immediately after World War 2. Other than the P-61 and a few other Maircraft offerings, most were simple kits that sold for the low price of about 35 cents and gave the owners many hours of pleasurable work. This kit features a full size plan with instructions steps, fuselage that is about 80% 3D cut, profile cut wings and tails, wood stock as required and a small factory sealed paper envelope of details. Never started. The small parts are still sealed; the larger parts that were never sealed have been inventoried complete and includes excellent step-by-step text and illustrated building instructions and full-size three-view plans with fuselage and wing templates.
