Comet Stinson 150 Voyager Struct-O-Speed - 10 inch Wingspan Flying Airplane, 2103-29

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Purchased new in 1972 from National Hobby in Ohio. Comet would advertise that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top, and it was not a completely idle boast. These kits were very highly prefabricated for their time, and in comparison to the regular stick and tissue models, the claim is not unfounded. Kit features all die cut wood parts and wheels, balsa prop, metal prop shaft and rubber hood and detailed instructions with flying tips. Complete and never started. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Maintrack Hawker P.1083 (P1083) Supersonic Hunter - Conversion Kit - Bagged, 1/72, PXC-01

Vacuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: Fair++

Sold

The rare "Thin Wing Hunter." High quality vac conversion features highly detailed moldings with fine recessed lines are of higher quality than many injection molded models, resin tail cone and full instructions with plans. As a conversion kit, it requires a base kit (not included) and the Airfix Hunter FGA9 is recommended. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes instructions. The P1083 was Hawker's effort to produce a true level flight supersonic jet; most aircraft of the time like the Swift, Mig-15 and F-86 went beyond the sound barrier only in a shallow dive. Work proceeded on the prototype in 1952. The wing design incorporated 50 degrees of leading edge sweepback and a mean thickness:chord ratio of 7.5% compared with the P.1067 Hunter's 45 degrees and 8.5%. The leading edge portion of the new wing, forward of the front spar, made provision for internal fuel bags, an innovation not fitted to early Hunters. The increased sweepback meant that, during a high speed pull-out, a very much greater loading was applied to the rear spar/undercarriage girder than on the standard machine. There was a great deal of hope that this would be the first supersonic fighter; but then the plug was pulled on the project and the prototype scrapped. However, the lessons learned were not wasted as they were used in later marks of the Hunter and aircraft after it.

Arcadia-Craft USS Cairo Federal Gunboat 1962 - (City Class), 1/192, 12

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare scale kit measuring just over 10 inches long. Scale is given as 1/4"-4', which I believe is 1/192. Excellent model with a factory cut hardwood hull and superstructure, metal fittings, other pre-cut hardwood and stock wood as required, full size plans and instructions. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions. The USS Cairo has a fascinating history. She was built as one of the City Class Ironclad Gunboats and was among the first in the Federal Navy. She was commissioned on January 16, 1862 and was torpedoed and sunk on December 12, 1862. She was 7 miles south of Vicksburg at the time and was headed for a bombardment. The damaged was done by an electrically-fired torpedo. The Cairo sank in shallow water and was forgotten. But the silt did a remarkable preservation on her. Amazingly she was found and subsequently raised in 1964. You can see this ship at a park near the Vicksburg National Cemetery and there is an excellent museum as well.
