In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.

Esoteric Navy Northrop BT-1, 1/72, NAF-16

Vacuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed

$38

The BT-1 was the first Northrop aircraft for the US navy. John Northrop had just formed his aircraft company in 1929, and back then a government contract was the best way to stay in the business. The BT-1 was a scaled down Army A-17. 54 were produced, and the aircraft resulted in the creation of the famous SBD Dauntless dive bomber by Douglas when they acquired Northrop. Still factory sealed. Very high quality kit with metal parts and full decals. Esoteric kits were perhaps the finest vacuform kits made. The molding quality rivaled or surpassed most injection molded kits. MPM Messerschmitt Me-262 A-1a / U3 & V056, 1/72, 72113

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$26

Limited issue kit. Nicely molded with recessed panel lines and many photoetched parts. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. NOTE: the decals are still sealed in the factory bag but have signs of very light staining. The A-1a/U3 was a very early reconnaissance fighter variant of the '262. It had two obliquely mounted Rb 50/30 cameras replacing the Mk 1089 cannon. It is not known if any production variants (A-4) of this aircraft were ever built. The A-1a/U3 was later fitted with FuG 218 radar equipment for night fighting and was rename V056. This aircraft was flown by Oberst Hajo Herrmann from Jagddivision 20, who reported excellent results. This lead to the development of the Me-262B-1A two seating being equipped for night fighting. The kit has never been started. Internal factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete including decals and instructions.

Guillows Grumman F6F Hellcat - 16 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, 1/32, 503

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$25

From the 1960s. One of a very popular 16.5 inch wingspan series of World War 2 stick and tissue flying kits. Includes die cut balsa parts, vacuform nose, wheels, plastic propeller, hardware, vacuform canopy, colored tissue, insignia and full size plans with detailed building instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.
