Master Modelcraft Supply Co Brig Washington - Commodore Famous Ship Line - 17 Inch Long And 12 Inch High Highly Prefabricated Wood And Plastic Ship, C-2

Wood and Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

Very, very rare model from 1954. Everyone knows of the Master Modelcraft aircraft kits. The ship kits are much rarer, and the Commodore Series was their 'flagship' of the modeling line. In an attempt to simply the difficult task of making wooden parts look like an intricate ship, they created perhaps the ultimate prefabricated classic ship models with completely finished wooden parts, metal fittings and numerous plastic parts. This model features a factory-finished wood hull, one sheet of die-cut printwood, and the rest of the parts are metal or plastic: there are 37 injection molded plastic parts from bulwarks to masts and yardarms and cast metal deck fittings as well. The model kit has never been started. The small metal and plastic parts (with the rigging thread) are still in a factory sealed clear bag. The other parts are still attached to the blue factory presentation cardboard or inventoried complete. With excellent instructions, large full size plan with two sides including many other drawings, rigging diagram, section view and step-by-step text instructions. Master Modelcraft Supply Company listed their address as N.Y. 66, New York during the early 1950s. The costly Commodore Series included C-1 Revenue Cutter, C-2 Brig Washington, C-3 Brig Boxer and C-4 Baltimote Clipper. Each was $2.95, a small fortune at that time for hobby kits. This contributed to their demise, low production numbers and rarity today. They also made a lesser line of ship kits that were prefabricated, but not to the level of the Commodore Series. They were all wood with metal fittings (part numbers B-1 through B-18). The Brig Washington was built in 1838 and was originally schooner rigged. In 1838 she was rerigged as a brig. During most her career she engaged in hydrographic work. Her 12 pound gun had a unique arrangement on a rotating turret-like platform amidships, enabling it to have a great field of fire. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, the Washington was seized by the Confederacy and armed with one huge 42 pound carronade and impressed into the Confederate Navy. She was finally scuttled in 1862 near New Orleans to prevent capture by the Union Navy.
