The F2A saw extensive and successful service in WWI and sported many interesting paint jobs from dark green, red and white and dazzle paint or 'Jazz Patterns.' The early flying boats of the RNAS were largely due to the design talents of Lt. John Porter. Porter had worked in America for Glenn Curtiss, and he returned to England in 1914 when WWI started. He reported to Felixstowe where he redesigned the 'Large America' flying boat into the F2A.
