1/72 A50138 Airfix Avro Lancaster B.III Special The Dam Busters - RAF 617 Squadron Operation Chastise 17 May 1943

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed VG

Still factory sealed. A new and detailed kit with 265 pieces. Special 'Dam Buster' version is properly modified to a No. 617 Squadron aircraft includes the Wallis 'Bouncing Bomb' or mine for attacking German dams in WWII. The bomb was spun to 500 rpm, and the attack had to take place at exactly 220 mph at 60 feet above the water. The bomb would be released and would skip over the water to the dam wall, where it would roll down roughly 30 feet underwater. At this point, it would detonate. Given that water is incompressible, the blast could only go one place - through the incredibly thick concrete dam wall. As you can imagine, the raid was dangerous and 32 crew were decorated after the May 1943 mission.
