Shortly after being declared ready for service, she took part in the Norway campaign. Despite alert defenses, Blucher and Lutzow sailed up the narrow passage with hopes of landing their infantry on target. The Norwegians were not fooled opened fire with 15cm shore batteries, immediately scoring hits on Blucher and then Lutzow. Blucher ran from the arc of the guns but stumbled onto an alert shore torpedo battery, which scored two devastating hits. The Blucher had the distinction of of being the only capital ship sunk by a shore-based torpedo battery during WWII. It is interesting that the old adage about shore based guns and ships was tested yet again and found to be true. It is reported that the Germans did not even know where the fire was coming from. Such long term, completely immobile defenses should have been well documented.
