Monogram 1/96 United States Earth Satellites Vanguard and Jupiter C with Launching Pad and Crew, PD41-98 plastic model kit

1/96 PD41-98 Monogram United States Earth Satellites Vanguard and Jupiter C with Launching Pad and Crew

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Very rare. First and only issue from 1958 with box art by R. Price. Very nicely detailed and molded in silver, gray and white plastic. Features missiles, launching pad with railings, ladders and crew of four. Never started. Decals are in 'excellent++' condition with a tiny bit of yellowing as the only flaw. Instructions are 'excellent' with slight yellowing and light general wear. Inventoried complete with all parts, Monogram Missile Models insert sheet and small Monogram catalog. Shipping insurance is required on this kit. The box is graded 'excellent' and has four solid corners, no repairs, superb gloss and color, no price tags, no tape, no marks from tags or tape, no fading and no tears or missing litho. The only flaws are general light wear as shown. It is interesting to speculate on how this kit became one of the rarest 1950s Monogram kits. Although Monogram and Revell found that missile kits sold very well initially, the interest fell off rapidly. Even the molds for such a simple kit would have cost $20,000 to $30,000 in 1958 US Dollars - so obviously the kit did not sell well or it would have been continued. The main reason is probably that this kit is a very late Monogram missile, and was issued when interest was already waning. Whereas other missile kits (Missile Arsenal) were reworked and re-released, the Earth Satellites never were and are seen much less often than the Rascal and Regulus II.
