Comet Fokker D-VIII Struct-O-Speed - 9.3 Inch Wingspan Flying Airplane, 2105-29 plastic model kit

2105-29 Comet Fokker D-VIII Struct-O-Speed - 9.3 Inch Wingspan Flying Airplane

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

From the 1960s. Comet would advertise that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top, and it was not a completely idle boast. These kits were very highly prefabricated for their time, and in comparison to the regular stick and tissue models, the claim is not unfounded. Kit features all die cut balsa wood parts, formed and finished wheels, wood prop, insignia (on the plans) and full, illustrated instructions. Complete and never started. At the time this kit was made, the entire '2100' series (as Comet called it) consisted of 2101 Piper Cub, 2102 Taylorcraft, 2103 Stinson Voyager, 2104 Cessna, 2105 Fokker DVIII, 2106 Beech Bonanza, 2107 Ryan Navion, 2108 Globe Swift and 2109 F-51 Mustang. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
