1/72 PX-028 Maintrack Gloster E.1/44 - Single Engine Meteor Back-Up - Bagged

Vacuform Model Kit

Still factory sealed. From 1994. Very high quality vac kit with moldings of higher quality than some injection molded kits. Features parts to build either prototype, main vac parts with all fine recessed panel lines, cockpit, cast metal details and full decals for two aircraft. During WWII, the British slated the Meteor to be the RAFs first operational fighter. However, in 1942 Rover was having significant problems producing the Whittle W2 jet engine. So the Air Ministry specified an alternative plan - a single engined jet fighter that could be used if there were insufficient engines for the twin-engined Meteor. From specification E.5/42, Gloster designed and manufactured two prototypes, either of which can be built with this kit. The aircraft turned out to be underpowered; luckily, the engine supply problem was solved when Rolls Royce traded engine production with Rover and the later took on tanks. Due to initially poor handling, the tail was raised to a near 'T Tail' and this feature was retained on the Meteor. The two prototypes remained as test beds, one of them flying until at least 1951. Both are reported as scrapped.
