1/175 3660-998 ITC Halibut SSGN 587 Cam-A-Matic Electric Powered Diving Motorized Submarine - (Regulus Sub)

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

From 1960. This model is the zenith of the ITC Design and Engineering Team, and maybe of all operational plastic model kits. It is not only rare but is considered the most complicated operating model ever produced. The large 24.75 inch submarine sails from the power of a large electric motor driving twin geared propellers. It changes headings, dives, surfaces, and a Regulus II missile comes out of the hanger and launches...all automatically. The engineering on this kit is fantastic and a major break-through for its time. The model worked, and did work well, but was certainly not a toy for inexperienced model builders. The high price ($9.98) and difficulties that youngsters had with assembly and operation made for a short production run. The fact the ITC left the model business for good shortly after releasing the kit contributed to the scarcity as well. This kit is unusual in that it never had the common 'Seen on TV Maverick' sticker on the box top. The box is not perfect, but is the best I have seen. It has factory-new color and gloss, no fading or stains, one price tag on a long side and two small pieces of clear tape on each long side. Two corners are solid, and the other two have been properly and expertly repaired from the inside. There is light general wear as shown. Inside, the kit is in exceptional, factory-new condition. It has never been started. All of the parts that were factory sealed are still in the factory sealed bags. The two hull halves and batter holder are still in place in their cardboard display. The blue display cardboard is 100% present and in near mint condition as well. The instructions are in superb near-mint condition as well, with none of the usual yellowing.
