The ZR-3 was originally built by Zeppelin Works at Friedrichshafen Germany. She was commissioned as the USS Los Angeles in 1924 by Mrs. Calvin Collidge. The Los Angeles logged almost 7 years of service and flew 4,398 hours. She was used to develop the US low-mast mooring system and pioneered the airplane-airship hook-up technique that later became famous in the 'aircraft carrier airships' Akron and Macon.
