1/490 Fred Pastorius Three Lockheed 1049 Super G Constellation Promotional Air Line Model - One TWA and two Pan Am Clipper 'Los Angeles' - Bagged

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: No Box

From the 1950s. Back when air travel was still an event, gift shops would sell small airplane models and major and minor airlines would give out small models to customers as promotional items. These three Super G Constellations are very finely molded with all recessed details. They are each 2.75 inches long. Two were originally Pan Am and have the clipper name 'Los Angeles' on the left wing. Both of the Pan Am models are excellent - they have never been broken, repaired or painted. The other is TWA and it has been broken and repaired on the elevator and twice on the wing. All parts are present, however. I used to think these were made by Hawk, but Dan Dill reports that they were made during the 50s and maybe the early 60s by TWA Captain Fred Pastorius in Oceanside, CA. Fred was an artist and produced several different models in this scale, mostly for TWA but a few other airlines and models also. Dan writes- 'Fred made these in his garage and they were sold at airport gift shops. There was no packaging as I recall; they were just sold loose in a small cardboard box of maybe twenty or so at a time. My father was a friend of Fred's and would fly with him once in awhile and always bring a few of them home for my brothers and me. I still have about twenty of them. Fred made model 749, 1049 and 1649 constellations and Martin 404s. He also made a TWA Boeing 707-131 with a plastic stand. It came wrapped in cellophane. His models were mostly TWA but I have learned he did make some others special order with other airline names etched on the wing. Fred also made gold plated models inside clear plastic bubbles with names etched on the clear plastic for gifts. My father had one made for my grandfather, which I still have.' Thank you Dan!!
