For you rail fans out there - an all original early 1900s railroad china oval serving platter from the famous Onondaga Pottery Company, Syracuse, New York. Used on either a Lackawanna Railroad dining car or Commissary. Measures 13.5 inches wide and 9.3 inches tall. It has never been touched up. No rim or face chips or cracks. There is a small narrow 1/8 inch long chip in the glazing on the back at the rim where the piece would sit on a table. The gloss is excellent but it has consistent crazing and medium brown stains as shown. Numerous website discuss the removal of such stains, but I did not attempt it. The back is stamped 'O.P.CO. Syracuse China.' which was used from 1897 to 1946. The date code is impressed into a circle - this further narrows the date to pre 1920. The date code is clearly in a circle, so it certainly dates from 1903 to 1911, which is when this date code was used. Unfortunately, the date circle is poorly impressed in the piece and is difficult to read. To my best guess - the final number in the circle is a 6. I cannot read the first number, so it could be anywhere in the 1903 to 1911 range. The weight and manufacturing flaws verify this date range. The piece will be double boxed and insurance is required.
