In the early 1940s turbojets had little thrust advantage over piston engine aircraft and a shorter range. It was no surprise that there were several mixed engine (piston and jet) designed tested and some reached operational status. The Curtiss XF15C-1 was to be a long ranged composite powered fighter. The Pratt and Whitney R-2800-34W drove a four bladed prop and the jet was a Allison Chalmers built version of the DeHavilland/Halford H-1 turbojet. Three prototypes were built and tested. The craft had a speed of 450 mph and a range of 1,250 miles. However, the rapid progress of turbojets made the concept obsolete. Trials continued but the aircraft were eventually scrapped.
