Contrail 1/72 Supermarine Southampton plastic model kit

1/72 Contrail Supermarine Southampton

Vacuform Model Kit

The Southampton was Britain's first post WWI flying boat. It was built to Air Ministry Specification R 18/24 for coastal defense and fleet work. Early Mark I production craft had a wooden hull and fabric covered wood frame flight surfaces. To reduce weight, Supermarine went to a duraluminum hull and metal flight surfaces in the Mark II. Eight aircraft went to the Argentine Navy. Australia and Japan also operated the reliable flying boat. The Mark IV was fitted with RR Kestral III engines and became the prototype Scapa. 78 Southamptons were built total, the majority being Mark II. I can see a crack between the lower and upper hull on both fuselage halves that will need to be fixed. Still factory sealed.
