The Hawk Model Company, founded in 1928 by brothers Dick and Phil Mates in Chicago, was a pioneer in producing scale model airplanes, ships, and figures, including injection-molded plastic kits. Marketed as America's Oldest Model Company, Hawk initially created solid-wood models and showcased plastic models at the 1934 Chicago World's Fair. They launched one of the first all-plastic kits, the Curtiss R3C-1 racer, in 1946, transitioning to polystyrene in 1949 and offering a variety of realistic scale models by the 1970s. One of Hawk's best selling kit lines was the Weird Ohs, featuring dragsters and hot rods created by Bill Campbell.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Sealed Good
$18
Still factory sealed but the seal has shrunk and drawn the box concave. This softbox issue is dated 1965 with Tom Morgan artwork. It is an excellent kit with great fit, finish and all recessed panel lines.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Sealed Good-
$25
Still factory sealed. This is the rare late 1950s issue hardbox with Bill Campbell boxart. This box art variation is harder to find than the others; I believe it is among the earliest of Bill's box art for Hawk and the first SBD issue after the Picture Gallery series was discontinued. It is an excellent kit for that time with great fit and finish, all recessed panel lines, a crew of two, dual rear guns, rotating propeller, centerline bomb with 'sling' and two smaller wing mounted bombs. Usually molded in gloss medium blue and clear. The box is graded 'good-' because it has the damage and large crease down the center left as shown.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: NM
$38
1965 hardbox issue in beautiful 'Near Mint' condition and with Tom Morgan boxart. This is a fine quality model that features parts for float or land versions, a crew of two and a unique water base for displaying the seaplane variant. Includes decals for the US and Dutch Military versions. Molded in gloss silver and clear plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. Hawk's instructions show photos of the civil ST version but they did not provide decals for it.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good++
$44
Hard-to-find 1962 hardbox release with Bill Campbell artwork. This kit is directly from the original owner and was purchased new by him on March 31, 1962. The box has great color and gloss, four solid corners, no tape or tags and no fading or tears. There is light general wear as shown. This kit is completely metal plated. The plating is very bright but only in 'above average condition'. That means that the plating is bright, not badly scratched or missing; but there is light general wear and (mainly) several dull spots where the clear varnish (that the factory put on to protect the plating) was a little too thick. Well detailed for that time with drop tanks, rocket launchers and optional position canopy. Includes decals for all three versions. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG
$42
This is the late 1950s hardbox issue with great Bill Campbell artwork. The kit features very fine panel line detail and recessed control surface outlines, extensive and very colorful decals for the aircraft shown on the boxart, pilot bust, standing pilot figure, two mechanics, drop tanks, full landing gear and more. Molded in silver and clear plastic. Never started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Sealed exc+

Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+
$26
Softbox dated 1959 with Bill Campbell artwork. Due to the 60 cent price extension, this kit is likely from the late 1960s. Well molded with all recessed panel lines, pilot bust, complete landing gear, bomb load, under-wing missiles, drop tank and more. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Sealed NM+
$95
Still factory sealed and very rare in investment-grade 'Near Mint+' condition. This early issue from the 1950s of the first commercial turboprop airliner is very well molded and detailed with Hawk's famous fit & finish. Features fine raised panel lines & recessed control surfaces, clear cabin & cockpit windows with the cockpit window frames molded in into the fuselage halves, rotating propellers & wheels, detailed landing gear, optional position boarding doors, passenger boarding ramp and more. Includes extensive Capital Airlines decals.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good-
$56
From 1966. This well detailed model of the early Jupiter launch vehicle features 360 degree rotating launch stand and base, working aerodynamic fin surfaces, Explorer satellite payload, ground crew and more. Includes full decals and lapel pin. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+
$52
Rare 1955 issue in the 'Picture Gallery' series. The dramatic scene shows Javelins intercepting IL-38 Bison bombers. Some of the Sparrow-like missiles are going ballistic (ground clutter perhaps?) while another blows the port wing forward (yes- forward) on the uppermost Bison. This series was done before Bill Campbell started doing the artwork for Hawk. As Bill told me, the Picture Gallery artist fell ill and Bill took over - that's how he got in with Hawk and why the PG issues were so short lived and rare today. This is an excellent kit for that time with Hawk's famous fit & finish, very fine raised & recessed surface detail, full landing gear, pilot figure, 6 air-to-air missiles and green-tinted clear canopy & 'teardrop' based display stand & arm. Even includes a 'near mint' condition capsule of factory glue and the special small, illustrated instruction sheet that is only about how to use the glue. The parts are the correct light silver plastic light green clear. Inside, the kit is exactly as it left the factory. All of the small parts are still sealed in the original factory 'krinkle' bags. Includes decals, assembly instructions and glue instructions. In the mid 1950s Hawk experimented with some interesting box shapes; this Javelin and the triangle-box F4D Skyray are the two best known. However, they were not the size of most other kits so stacking them was difficult. Hawk discontinued the practice fairly quickly and went back to standard size, rectangular model boxes.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: VG+
$59
Very rare 'Triangle Box' issue from the late 1950s. Hawk tested this novel and colorful box only with the Skyray. Dealers found it difficult to stack with other kits and it was discontinued. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. This box is 'very good.' Fortunately, this one even missed the factory tape sealing machine. There are no price tags and no other tape. The box has not been repaired. There is edge wear, some creasing and a short tear on the bottom but no litho or cardboard is missing.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good
$26
1962 60 cent issue with classic Bill Campbell box art. Inside is a fine kit with excellent fit and fine recessed & raised panel lines. Includes pylon display stand which is excellent for use in a 1930s Air Racing Diorama. Never started and complete with all parts, decals and instructions. The Ike was built by Ben Howard near the Old Chicago Airport (now Midway) and first flew in competition during the Thompson Trophy Race in 1932. It finished 7th with William Ong at the controls. In 1933 she finished 3rd with Roy Minor as pilot at an average speed 8 mph above 1932. In 1934, she finished yet another 8 mph above '33 with Harold Neumann as pilot and finished 4th in the Thompson.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Fair+
$32
First issue from the early 1950s in the one-piece box. Molded in high gloss yellow and black. The model has not been started. Complete with instructions and all parts. This kit is from early in this first issue, and the first kits were not issued with decals. In the 1920s through the 1940s Hawk made constant scale 1/48 aircraft kits from wood. In 1946 they added plastic injection molded kits to the line and were possibly the first injection molded kit manufacturer in the USA. When Hawk made an early jump to all-plastic kits they kept the 1/48 scale and created these new one-piece boxes with two color artwork.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Exc+
$32
Rare, 1950s earlier hardbox issue with Bill Campbell artworok showing the Ryan over the coast. Very nicely molded kit with all recessed panel lines and excellent fit. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good
$225
Very rare and highly desirable model dated 1964. It is based on the proposed atomic bomber that was to be powered by the nuclear engines that were in the prototype stage. Features retractable landing gear, operating wing flaps, movable ailerons and canards, removable nuclear engines, two docking parasite fighters and cool 'jet flame' exhaust in clear red plastic. Molded in silver, clear and red-tinted clear plastic. Never started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions present. The instructions are 'near mint' and the decals are perfectly flat & 100% intact but have limited light brow age foxing on the backing paper only on the right side. Also includes a modern reproduction decal sheet. The box was factory sealed until fairly recently, which is why is has concave sections as shown from being pulled tight by the shrinking seal. That is why it is only graded 'good.' This kit must be shipped insured.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Exc+
$175
Very rare and much more so in an 'Excellent+' condition box. This kit is from 1949, and even predates the Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' that started the plastic model craze in the United States. This model is molded in the correct glossy medium gray with a unique early stand. The model was issued with instructions but did not come with decals. The instructions tell you that '...the plane is molded in the proper base color, and if you intend to paint your favorite air-line markings be sure to use good enamel (not lacquer). The kit has never been started. The contents are as they left the factory. They have been inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions present. Hawk was a producer of wooden kits (often with plastic & metal details) before and after WWII and was one of the handful of manufacturers to produce such kits (known as 'solids') in a consistent 1/48 scale. Hawk made aircraft, ship and train models in this fashion. The very first injection molded aircraft kits in the United States were made by Varney or Hawk in 1946, but they did not catch on quickly. Hawk was always an innovative and quality-driven company, and they took a gamble on injection molded kit well before they were popular. As early as 1946 they issued the 1/48 Curtiss R3C-1 with wheels. Like Varney's Fleet Sub and PT-17, they were shunned by hobby dealers. Hawk persisted with the 'Evolution of the Jet' gift set in 1948 and issued several kits - the Supermarine S6B, Gee-Bee, Howard Ike, Laird (all in acetate) and the F-84G and this Constellation (both in polystyrene). All were in the two-tone one-piece box like this Constellation model.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good-
$28
1964 hardbox issue with Bill Campbell artwork. This is a well detailed kit of the famous 1930s racing aircraft and features fine, recessed panel lines, nicely detailed engine, removable cowling, pilot figure, rigging diagrams and more. Molded in bright red and clear plastic. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. In 1929 at the National Air Races in Cleveland, the Wright Whirlwind powered Travel Air and the pilot Doug Davis beat the finest Army and Navy pilots to win the first presentation of the legendary Thompson Trophy. The ship was designed in such secrecy that it was known as the 'Mystery Ship.'
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Sealed VG++
$48
Still factory sealed. However, sections of the seal are starting age deterioration. This is the large, 1/48 scale chrome plated issue that features a full interior with floor seats, instrument panel and yokes, full landing gear, rotating propellers and more.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good-
$38
1968 Chrome Plated version with John Andrews artwork. The chrome plating is in 'average' condition. Well detailed model for that time with full cockpit for pilot and observer, rear gun and spare ammo casings, opening canopy, detailed engine and optional bomb load. All clear protection sleeves are still intact and the parts are well protected and separated for safe shipment. Never started. Inventoried and NOTE: missing (1) small part, the propeller retainer (easily made). Otherwise complete with all other parts, decals and instructions present.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Good
