Strombecker was famous for this line of precarved hardwood and plastic kits. All parts are made to shape, including the fuselage, which made these kits easy to assembly and finish. The scale is not listed but has roughly a 6.5 inch wingspan when completed. This kit also includes a clear injection molded canopy, wooden base, wire support, color decals, glue and sandpaper and a stand. When complete it makes an impressive desk top display. Never started. All parts are still in the factory sealed internal bag and includes instructions.

Beautiful kit from the 1950s made of quality Western Pine hardwood - no balsa. The carving is done to the final shape and when completed it makes an impressive model. Inventoried complete with all parts and plans. Before plastic kits were introduced, Strombecker was famous as the premier hardwood preshaped model manufacturer. In the 1940s and 1950s, Strombecker kits were flawlessly engineered but not inexpensive. All wooden parts are hardwood and are precarved to shape - you only had to glue, sand and paint to finish them.

Very rare. This is a solid wood model kit from the 1940s. It features two sheets of printwood, blocks and balsa stock, cardstock landing gear doors, color insignia, fully formed wood wheels, sandpaper, high quality plans with templates and some text instructions. Never used and complete. Supreme Scale Models were made by the Steve Patti Company in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In the pre-plastic days they produced an extensive line of solid scale models and a large number of flying stick-and-tissue models as well; they were called 'Supreme Flyers.'

Very rare model from 1949. Highly prefabricated and robust control line model from the "Contest Craft Company." Features high quality balsa parts that are all either factory cut to shape or die-cut, covering material, landing gear wire, full size plans and detailed instructions. This kit has been inventoried complete but NOTE: it has minor and 'professional' quality assembly. The center core of the fuselage (a flat assembly) is built. There is no other assembly. Thanks to Dusty Rhodes, we now know a little bit more about Contest Craft. Mr. Richard W. Backora registered the company name in 1949 and it appears that this model was one of his designs. Mr. Backora was born in New York, NY in 1924. He was a WWII Navy veteran and also served in the US Marine Corps. He was an Armament Equipment Branch Head for the Naval Air Systems Command and retired after 28 years of government service. He then spent 15 years in the private sector as a staff and project engineer with Thiebolt Aircraft, Republic Aviation and Melpar, Inc. Mr. Backora was very active in his local community in Church and secular organizations. He was also a member of the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and the Lewes R/C Club. Although no address is given for the manufacturer, the instructions state that you should ask your hobby dealer for other Contest Craft Company kits.

This large model is 35.5" long and has a 71" wingspan. This is one of the famous Sal Taibi's National award winning designs for use with 'hot' engines .15 to .29 displacement. Sal was one of the early 'Kings Of Gas Free Flight' and a very gifted designer. Feature high quality balsa and plywood parts, spar and strip wood, metal stock as required, aluminum motor mount, hardware and excellent full size plans. Never started and inside it is in factory-new condition. The small parts are still in the factory sealed clear bag; the other parts have been inventoried complete with the plans. NOTE: this kit was shipped in the very sturdy box shown. Unless you specify otherwise, we will send it wrapped in brown paper. If you wish to have it boxed, extra postage will apply. Designed for 'Sniffing Thermals,' the honored pastime of a generation of model enthusiasts. Flying model aircraft predated powered flight; however, balsa wood and printwood were not introduced until the early 1930s and the hobby took off, as well as the hunt for thermals. Gas flight began in the early 1930s, and powered models (most all driven by Brown engines) took home so many awards that they were forever separated in competition from rubber powered models. Design of gas models was tricky since RC (radio control) models could not yet be applied to the mass market; so a gas model had to not only fly and climb under power, but then glide sufficiently - all in a stable fashion and without any operator inputs once the airplane took off.

The company went out of business just as production began on the DC-3, which was in 1947.

1940s WWII wooden kit from AMCO, which was a division of Comet. Features all hardwood parts including blocks & wood stock, sandpaper, CASCO glue, a full size cardstock template and patter sheet and highly illustrated double-sided assembly instructions. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and paperwork present. This is an official identification model. The US Armed Forces found themselves in a World War with almost no ID models. Someone decided that it would be perfect to let the air-minded modeling youth build them for the military, and thus the "Identification Model" was born. However, the idea did not last as the quality ranged from excellent to horrible, with the majority on the later side. A much better substitute was found by casting one-piece models out of a hard rubber plastic. Little did anyone know that this was a foretaste of the doom of the solid wood scale model, which was replaced by plastic in the early 1950s.

Rare and even more so in this conditino - still factory sealed. This 15 Cent issue from the late 1960s or early 1970s. The famous and popular Jetfire features a light-weight plastic canopy with pilot outline and completely diecut balsawood parts with colorful red factory printing. It can be assembled in less than a minute and was ready to fly! Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2014.
