MPC Pilgrim Observer Space Station Nuclear, 1/100, 9001

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc+

Sold

Rare 1970s original issue; not the common reissue. Still factory sealed but the seal has shrunk and drawn the box top slightly concave. This offering from MPC is one of the most interesting and a classic among Science Fiction kits. The model dates from 1975. Large 1/100 scale kit is 17 inch long, has excellent detail and a large clear section to show interior detail. Fourteen movable parts allow you to display or change the ship's configuration from "Launch" to "Earth's Atmosphere Entry" to "Space Cruise". Also contains complete 'technical' flight data, a report on the NERVA Nuclear Engine and an iron-on shirt transfer. There was a time when space research was not aimed at the earth's orbit and moon, but at distant planets in our solar system and eventually beyond. Planning went much further than most people are aware. The main limitation was seen as the chemical rocket motor. It could only be fired once and the specific impulse was limited. To overcome these limitations, the United States embarked on a large program to build the nuclear rocket engine. Unlike the nuclear aircraft engine, this program overcame the technical obstacles placed before it was VERY successful. The effort resulted in numerous test engines up through the Phoebes 5000 MW monster, which is still the world's most powerful reactor. The nuclear engines could run at full power for an hour, then be shut down and restarted up to a dozen times or more. Also, the flow of fuel (liquid hydrogen) could be regulated through turbo-pumps to 'throttle' the engine just as one does a car engine. Crew radiation shielding from the engine was less than requirements for cosmic ray shielding. At one point, a KIWI series reactor (KIWI-TNT) was blown up on purpose to test the environmental impact; it was minimal and clean up went quickly. The final result was to be a space rated engine called NERVA, or Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application. Before the project was terminated, many vehicles were designed for deep space exploration based on these amazing engines.

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. In the 1930s Pan Am was a household word in the USA for their romantic foreign routes and the glamorous 'China Clippers' that crossed the Pacific Ocean, stopping at such ports as Wake Island. Pan Am's attention soon turned to the Atlantic. Since non-stop service would be needed, a new aircraft was designed. The Boeing 314 was chosen. This huge flying boat started flying the Atlantic mail in 1939 with a trip over 26 hours long. Before the war, the 314 fleet flew the Pacific, Atlantic and other routes. The airliner was a palace compared to the cramped jets and limited service of today. The flight deck compared to the bridge of a ship and housed 6 crew. It was connected to the passenger cabin by a spiral staircase. The luxurious cabins were divided into 5 standard compartments, each seating 10 passengers, a dining salon for 14, a special compartment for four and a deluxe bridal suite. 74 could be carried on day trips and 40 when sleeping quarters for all passengers was required. Chefs prepared gourmet meals while passengers lounged in deeply cushioned wicker chairs and enjoyed a grand view of the scenery from about 5,000 feet. The age of the Clippers ended shortly after WWII when land planes could operate at much higher speeds than the flying boats.

Monogram Boeing B-52D Stratofortress with Jet Sound, 1/72, PA215

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+++

Sold

Exceptional 1968 first issue in investment-grade 'excellent+++' condition. Although not flawless, this is the finest box that have ever seen for this kit in my 24 years of collecting. The box is straight and square with perfect color and gloss, no fading and no price tags. The only flaws are minor light general edge wear as shown and some discoloration on one short side where the original price tag was; the tag has since fallen off. Inside, the model is in amazing condition. The original yellow cello internal seal is present but very neatly opened on three sides. One side remains attached. Monogram only sealed this kit from the inside by gluing on the yellow cardboard and clear cello. It was intended for the potential buyer to lift off the box top where they would be greeted with a beautiful display of Monogram workmanship and model design neatly displayed on a cardboard background. All internals are still mint and you can see and even the original unopened tube of Monoglue is included. This is a very nicely detailed model that features 207 pieces, a crew of three, detailed cockpit, elevating and traversing rear turret, opening and closing bomb bay doors, operating wing flaps, operating spoilers, optional position entry hatch and landing gear, and optional parts to display one nacelle open to show the jet engine. The kit has never been started. The motor and hardware are still in the factory sealed bag at the left. The other parts were never factory sealed and they have been inventoried complete. The decals and instructions are in amazing 'excellent++' condition. I have placed the clear parts inside a clear plastic case so they will not be damaged during shipment. Please note that postage insurance is required with this model.
