Monogram F-51D (P-51D) Mustang Action Model - Four Star Issue, 1/32, PA77-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

$75

Dated 1962. First issue of this classic 'Action Model' with great detail and mold quality. Features opening canopy to show the highly detailed cockpit, tiny levers under the wings drop 2 bombs, a small knob on the bottom rotates and extends and retracts the main gear and tailwheel; all gear doors including tailwheel open and close automatically with the gear. Not only do these features sound great, but they work. My built kit is 30 years old and functions like new! Molded in silver, black and clear. NOTE: this kit has minor, neat assembly. One part is glued to the interior of the wing ('professional' quality assembly), bomb halves are assembled ('excellent++), fin halves are assembled ('near mint') and the wheels and hubs are attached to the struts and roll properly ('excellent+'). There is no other assembly and zero painting. Inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. This kit has an interesting history. In 1961, Monogram introduced the 1/32 scale Phantom Mustang. This was a very ambitious project. The kit was transparent, highly detailed and included two electric motors. One motor raised and lowered the main gear and tail wheel while the other spun the prop. Two small levers on the base dropped bombs from the wings. It was molded in clear, silver, black, red and zinc chromate green. Although successful, the kit was expensive to produce and Monogram charged a hefty retail price of $4.98. As a way to create more revenue from the molds, Monogram cleverly created this kit - using some of the same molds as the Phantom Mustang. The silver parts tree was completely re-cut and does not match the Phantom version. The red stand, gears and motorizing features were simply left out and the model molded in solid colors. The gear retraction/extension features was retained, but not motorized. On the new silver parts tree they added a small knob (placed on the bottom of the wing) and the same for the bomb dropping mechanism. This lowered the price to $1.98 and this additional revenue hopefully helped pay down the original mold costs.

Decals are excellent. 1995 reissue of the famous 'Four Star' kit from the early 1960s. Features folding wings, rotating prop and wheels. Never started. First issue from about 1952. Molded in bright yellow plastic. Please note that this issue has no part number, and Revell called it the "International Harvester Truck." When the same kit was reissued around 1954, they called it the International Auto Wagon. Never started. All parts are still factory sealed in the early style 'krinkle' bag. With the early, simple, text-only instructions sheet. Before the 1950s 'model building' never made the top 10 list of boy's activities. Hobbies were nothing new to America in the 1930s/40s, but they were not mainstream. Shortly after the turn of the century, many dedicated modelers built flying or static airplanes, ship, train, automotive or other subjects. Basic kits existed, but the majority of these models were built from scratch, which demanded a high talent level developed from years of experience. That changed in the early 1950s. The phenomenon of the Revell/Gowland & Gowland 'Highway Pioneers' car kits was a significant force in proving that model building as a hobby could have mass appeal, provided that the kits were easy enough to build and finish. These 1/32 scale vehicles could be built in an hour after dinner and looked much like the real car. The Highway Pioneers series lead to the production of other subjects in plastic and the effect was revolutionary. By the early 1960s, model building was the #1 past time of American boys.

Comet Sparky - 32 Inch Wingspan Wakefield-Style Flying Aircraft, 3408-149

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG++

$52

Purchased new on Feb. 28, 1968. Rare large flying model. It is a reissue of the 1950s release. Features high quality print and strip balsa wood, a beautiful, large carved balsa prop that needs final sanding to shape, fully formed wheels, thrust button, metal and wood stock as required, tissue, and excellent full size plans with instructions. Never started and complete. These aircraft were common in the 1930s when the sport of free-flight model airplanes reached it's zenith. It was not uncommon for these models to fly for 45 minutes or more on rubber power alone - many flew out of site, and it became common practice to write your name, address and phone number on the covering tissue. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998.
