ARIA stood for Apollo Range Instrumented Aircraft and later Advanced Range Instrumented Aircraft. These special aircraft were designed to deploy around the world to provide telemetry acquisition, vehicle tracking and two way voice relay between manned Apollo missions and mission control in Houston, especially in areas where no ground-based telemetry and tracking facilities were available. Far and away the most noteworthy feature of this aircraft was the huge, rounded nose. Inside it is still the world's largest airborne radar parabolic dish antenna measuring 7 feet in diameter! As you can imagine, ARIA aircraft received many nicknames like 'Snoopy,' 'Bulbous,' 'Hog Nose' and 'The Nose That Goes.' Eight C-135 aircraft were ARIA modified and the crew could be up to 23 persons depending on the mission length and complexity. Early aircraft were deployed over the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico during Apollo launches and over the Pacific at splashdown. The first mission for all 8 aircraft together was during Apollo 6 in 1968. Typical missions lasted 10 hours and was limited only by the amount of fuel on board since they could not be fueled in flight. The aircraft were a success and proved to be reliable in their role. One ship, #3704, is preserved at the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio.

1978 issue after Aurora went out of business and Monogram bought their molds. Monogram only reissued Aurora's best and most commercially viable kits and the 727 was one of the few that made the cut. In this case, they saw the molds could be improve, and the result is a much better & accurate kit and the best 'short' body 727 available in near 1/100 scale. Monogram added a network of very fine raised panel lines to the fuselage (the original had no panel lines), filled the deep e-doors over the wings and made them fine raised also, added wing fences & fine raised panel lines to the wings, added flap hinges to the wing undersides and added fine raised panel lines to the horizontal stabilizers. It is also called 'Aircraft 100', 'Project 100' and even Su-100. Four aircraft were built but only the first prototype flew. In 1963, the Soviet government held a request for proposal among the aircraft design bureaus. The Sukhoi design had a very high cruise speed of 3,200 km/h (2,000 mph) and was favored over the designs submitted by Yakovlev and Tupolev. After a preliminary design review in June of 1964, the building of a prototype was authorized. Development of the T-4 required massive research efforts to develop the technologies necessary, including the manufacturing technologies to machine and weld the materials (much of titanium) necessary to withstand sustained Mach 3 flight. Nearly 600 patents or inventions are attributed to the program. The first flying prototype was finally completed in the autumn of 1971. The first T-4, designated "101", first flew on 22 August 1972. The test pilot was Vladimir Ilyushin, son of famed aircraft designer Sergei Ilyushin, and the navigator was Nikolai Alfyorov. Testing continued to 19 January 1974. The T-4 flew only ten times for a total of 10 hours and 20 minutes. Work continued on an additional three airframes (one for static testing) through 1975. In 1974, the Ministry of Aviation Industry (Soviet Union) ordered work suspended on the T-4 project, which was then officially scrapped on 19 December 1975. One T-4 survives. Aircraft '101' (the flying prototype #1) is on display at the Central Air Force Museum in Monino near Moscow.
