Lindberg Q-Ship - (Decoy Ship / Sea Raider / USS Atik / SS-Carolyn) - Motorized, 1/390, 780M-129

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: NM-

Sold

Very rare. From the late 1950s. Fantastic condition kit with Ray Gaedke artwork. The box is near mint and has a very light wear and a light crease as the only flaws. This is the Motorized version of the Lindberg Q Ship, which has an unknown prototype but is suppose to be a WWI style Q-Ship submarine trap. The ship appears to be a WWI British Q Ship by the title, yet looks a little modern and has US numbers of 171 (which apparently mean nothing). This model was also issued as the 'Decoy Ship' and 'Sea Raider'. The Lindberg model actually has the layout of the AK-101 USS ATIK, which was formerly the SS-CAROLYN, built in 1912. The CAROLYN was recommissioned as the USS ATIK and at the start of WWI which was a real US Q-ship. This kit has never been started. It is either still in the internally sealed factory bag or has been inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Comet Boeing B-29 Superfortress 25.5 inch Wing Span Solid Model, 1/64, M3

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

Sold

1944 issue. When aircraft modeling became popular in the 1930s, most builders made flying models. However, there were a measurable percentage of hobbyist who insisted on making static (called 'solid' models) scale models with the maximum amount of detail in the best tradition of ship modelers. The kits they used to practice their art were basic. Many times the kit consisted of blocks of wood and plans - the famous (or infamous) "Make Wood Look Like Airplane" kits from the 1930 and 1940s. This did not stop them from producing magnificent works of art, many of which are in museums around the world. The more deluxe kits, such as this Comet example, features precarved wood, cut to a profile shape in all three dimensions. This kit also contains other deluxe touches such as wheels, clear plastic blisters and other details, full color decals and even a full tube of cement. Inside, this kit has never been started and is 100% complete with all wooden parts, clear plastic blisters, black plastic wheels, decals (like new), sandpaper, full plans and glue. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions.

Ideal Aeroplane & Supply Ocean Liner SS America / Troop Ship USS West Point / S.S. Australis Wooden Ship Kit, 1/330

Wood and Metal Model Kit,   Box Condition: Poor

Sold

Very rare. Large wooden and metal kit builds to just over 26 inches long. This model is of the SS America Ocean Liner, which was designed by the famous naval architect William Francis Gibbs. She was laid down in 1938 and entered service on August 22 1940 as the flagship of the United States Lines. World War II interrupted her passenger service. The ship was active through the war. She narrowly escaped being sunk off Singapore during the Japanese invasion. After the war she resumed her North Atlantic route. The liner was the pride of the US Merchant fleet before the USS United States was commissioned. When the 'Big U' entered service, the two liners were stable mates and often appeared in the same travel agency posters and prints. By 1964 aircraft had taken a large section of the ocean liner travelers away, and the America was sold to Chandris Group and was renamed the Australis. She sailed for 14 years in a very successful career and was the last liner to sail from Southampton to Australia/New Zealand. She was laid up in 1977. She changed owners several times, but was never again successful. While being towed to Thailand, the lines broke and she ran aground in the Canary Islands, where the wreck broke up after time - but not before the locals rescued many items from the ship. The model box is poor but the kit inside is in excellent condition. Large wooden and metal kit builds to just over 26 inches long. Kit features pre-carved hull, metal fittings, very large full size plans, print wood and very thick printed cardstock, building instructions, perspective views and rigging instructions/diagrams. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. NOTE: the plans have bug damage but are still usable. You can easily convert it to the USS West Point if you have photos of the ship (which are on the internet) - the main difference is the addition of lifeboats and different paint. Photos of the S.S. Australis will provide the needed data to convert her to that ship, but this conversion will require more work than the West Point.
