First, it is the first production monoplane and played a key roll in early airmail. In the 1920s, Government contracts for flying airmail on a $/mile basis was about the only thing keeping commercial aviation alive and growing. In 1926, the M-1 was the first aircraft to fly with PAT, Pacific Air Transport. PAT linked Seattle to LA with mail contracts. The other unique item is that this was the Ryan NYPs (Lindbergh's aircraft) father. When Lindy visited Ryan in 1927, he flew the M-1. He requested an airplane that was similar but larger - thus the NYP was born and aviation history was made.
