Lindberg US Fleet Submarine - (ex Varney), 1/240, 703-98

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+++

$125

Rare kit with a fascinating history. These molds are believed to be the oldest production plastic ship model in US modeling history. The kit started as the Varney Fleet Sub in the mid 1940s. It is widely regarded as the very first USA all-plastic construction kit of a military vessel. Varney produced an all plastic aircraft kit at the same time, the PT-17. It is the #1 candidate for the first plastic airplane kit in the USA. Varney was a famous manufacture of model trains, first O then a leader in HO models. The two new additions did not sell very well - remember, the Gowland/Revell 'Highway Pioneers' had yet to be issued, so the boom in modeling had not occurred. Varney soon sold the molds for the Fleet Sub and the PT-17 to O-Lin (along with the molds for a fantastic multi-media kit with a wooden hull and plastic fittings, the Varney PT Boat). O-Lin was a joint venture by Paul Lindberg and Mr. Olsen. O-Lin successfully reissued the PT Boat with an injection molded hull and deck, PT-17 Stearman and Fleet Sub but modified the molds for the Sub. The original Varney kit had a solid, one-piece black hull and gray fittings. O-Lin engineers created a two-piece hull that provided a hollow hull and made from the same shot of plastic as the fittings. The 'Lin' in O-Lin, Paul Lindberg, was already well known for his publication of articles and plans for flying model aircraft in some of the leading aviation publications in the 1940/50s. Mr. Lindberg soon bought out Mr. Olsen and began marketing the same O-Lin kits under 'The Lindberg Line.' One immediate change was the box art. O-Lin box art was usually two or three color and not very exciting. Near the end of O-Lin, the partners asked Ray Gaedke to provide some box art. The bright colors and vivid action were an immediate hit, and Paul Lindberg took this lesson and Mr. Gaedke with him to the new 'Lindberg Line.' Lindberg continued to issue the old Varney kits with the O-Lin modifications. The kit has been issued by a resurgent Lindberg as late at 2009, likely making it the longest running plastic ship kit in US history. This model is in superb condition. The Ray Gaedke box art has perfect color and gloss, four solid corners and only the light wear shown. Inside, the model has not been started. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes 'excellent+' condition decals and 'near mint' condition instructions.

Lindberg Douglas X-3 Stiletto - High Speed Research Aircraft, 1/48, 71425

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Sealed Exc

Karo-As Focke-Wulf Fw-58B Weihe - Austrian Air Force / German Luftwaffe, 1/72, AM-0372

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

$49

Rare, limited run injection molded kit with all fine recessed panel lines and an injection molded canopy. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. In August of 1933, Focke-Wulf responded to a bid from the Technisches Amt of the RLM to develop a twin engine training aircraft. Focke-Wulf was able to design and build it's entry, the FW-58, faster than Arado could theirs. The first flight of Fw-58 V-1 took place on January 18, 1935. There were no problems and the aircraft fulfilled all requirements. This design proved so successful over the years that Fw-58s were used as transition trainers from single to multi-engine as well as these other training rolls: dedicated multi engine, bomber, blind flying and navigation, gunner, radio operators, reconnaissance and more. Fw-58 also served as passenger aircraft with Lufthansa, others flew freight and some were used for search and rescue. Foreign operators were numerous and included Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Sweden. The reliability and robustness of the design was legendary. As just one example, the Sweden flew these aircraft until 1960.

Lindberg FJ-2 Fury Jet Fighter - First Logo Small Box Issue, 1/48, 516

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$44

Rare first issue from the mid 1950s that features Ray Gaedke artwork, the circular Lindberg logo and short, early two-piece box. Correctly molded in an amazing metallic dark blue with a red nose and clear canopy. Includes the correct early instructions. Please note, the instructions have the circle logo and the rectangular logo, which was not uncommon for early Lindberg kits. NOTE: this kit has minor and neat assembly of the pilot to the chair and the chair to the floor. But the wrong glue was used so they did not stick together. No other parts have glue on them. Inventoried with all plastic parts present and instructions. NOTE: Missing decals. Paul Lindberg created plans for stick and tissue flying models that were published in popular modeling magazines in the 1930s. During this time, he marketed wooden flying kits, asking builders to request that your local dealer carry "The Lindberg Line" of models. When plastic kits first appeared, Paul Lindberg and a Mr. Olsen founded O-Lin models, purchased the unsuccessful Varney molds for the Fleet Sub, PT Boat, LST and PT-17. After mold modification, they entered production and quickly cut new molds such as the P-80, Seabee and more. The association with Mr. Olsen did not last long, and Paul Lindberg took over or bought out the molds, thus starting the famous plastic "Lindberg Line". The first box art was simply carry over from O-Lin. Early O-Lin artwork was simple and two -color. However, Ray Gaedke did some late O-Lin boxes such as the Corsair, which was also used by Lindberg. Gaedke artwork was colorful and bold, and Paul Lindberg wasted no time in having Gaedke make the new artwork for the Lindberg Line.

KP Letov S-328 Floatplane - (S.328), 1/72

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

$14

Very attractive 1930s float plane. Contains markings for Czech Air Force. Never started and inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. And thank you to Ales Pakosta for the following information- The actual use of the S-328 floatplane was quite unique. It was used as a training target tug plane during the Czechoslovak Anti-Aircraft Artillery maneuvers in contemporary Yugoslavia, in the Boka Kotorska (Bay of Kotor, now in Montenegro). In fact, it was not for naval artillery training but was done in this way so that shells fired from shore fell into the sea to prevent damage on the land. As there was no appropriate airfield nearby, the target tug aircraft had to operate from the sea surface. As a result, about three aircraft were modified for this task from land-based light bomber-scout biplane. They replaced the classic fixed undercarriage with a pair of floats purchased from the British Short company. The seaplanes remained in use for a several years in this special role. The land-based versions of the S-328 (which can be built from the kit as well) were very popular in the Czechoslovak Air force in the mid thirties; many were seized by Luftwaffe in 1939. The last known combat use of these machines came in 1944 during the Slovakian National Uprising, when their pilots had to fight such planes as Messerschmidt Bf109G.
