Cleveland Stinson Reliant - 82.5 inch Wingspan RC Model Airplane, GP-66B

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc

Sold

Very rare huge model in 1/6 scale. Unlike most flying airplane models, this kit is an exact duplicate of the real airplane - right down to the wing rib spacing, the rib structure, and stringer spacing. Beautifully done as only Cleveland could do. Can be flown with class A / B / C motors. Includes full size plans and many prefabricated parts. This model came from the estate of a very active and particular early aircraft kit collector. It is like factory-new inside and has not been started. Complete with all parts, plans and decals (if originally included). The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot’s English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh’s 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called “The Aviation Craze” that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh’s flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream – to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world’s longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business – Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called ‘Aviation’s great Recruiter – Cleveland’s Ed Packard’ by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Airmodel Blohm & Voss Ha-139 V3/U-1 Four Engine Catapult Seaplane, 1/72, 317

Vacuform Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

Sold

In the 1930s Deutsche Lufthansa was operating a long distance airmail service. To expand this service, it was thought that if a ship could sail part way across the North and South Atlantic, it could catapult launch a long-range seaplane to carry the mail. This system would allow the mail to arrive days ahead of time. The result was the graceful Ha 139 V2 (D-AJEY) 'Nordwind' and Ha 139 V1 (D-AMIE) 'Nordmeer', which were finished late summer 1936. Using the Lufthansa catapult ship 'Friesenland' and 'Schwabenland', the Ha-139s proved to be exceptional aircraft and did very well on trans oceanic flights. Some 139s were launched from the ship near the Azores. This allowed the mail to arrive in New York only 16.5 hours later. Improvements were built into Ha 139 V3 (D-ASTA) 'Nordstern' and all three aircraft few the North Atlantic route. Eventually there were also used in service between Bathurst in Western Africa and Recife in Brazil. In June 1939 the 139s made their 100th crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Now there were few obstacles for airline service to North and South America, but politics kept the Germans from landing in the USA. When WWII began, two aircraft were in service on the southern route and all three were impressed into Luftwaffe service. V1 and V2 became transports and took part in the Invasion of Norway. V3 was given defensive guns and minesweeping equipment and became U-1. The airborne endurance was 25 hours, which is quite remarkable. When the spare parts ran out, these graceful aircraft were scrapped. Never started. Factory sealed bag or inventoried 100% complete with all parts and instructions. The kit builds the civil or military versions of V3. Basic vac kit. Not recommended for builders who are not experienced with vacuform kits.
