Merlin Models Hawker Osprey Frog Penguin Replica, 1/72

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

$42

Very limited edition replica of the historic Frog Penguin kit. Nicely molded. Also includes photocopies of the original Penguin instructions. The kit has never been started and is still sealed in the internal factory bag with all paperwork. In the late 1930s, before WWII, Frog created the world's first line of injection molded plastic model kits. Since Frog stood for 'Flies Right Off the Ground' and Frog had a famous line of flying models, the world's first all injection molded kits were called Frog Penguin for the bird that does not fly. The Penguin Osprey was among the early pre-war releases by Frog. The kit is reproduced from actual Frog Penguin kits belonging to the extensive collection of the owner of Merlin Models. Only 2000 copies were made and each is serial numbered.

Comet Stinson Voyager Struct-O-Speed Flying Aircraft - Coke Bottle Issue, Q4

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

$38

1950s/very early 1960s issue with a ~14.75 inch wingspan. Comet advertised that the Struct-O-Speed series 'Puts Itself Together...That Quick!' on the box top, and it was not a completely idle boast - they were highly prefabricated, built in a fraction of the time of regular stick-and-tissue models and flew well if properly built and trimmed. Features high quality die cut balsa sheet parts, pre-formed wire landing gear strut, fully formed wooden wheels, plastic prop and thrust button and excellent plans with instructions and flying tips. Never started and complete. Comet was a famous manufacturer of stick and tissue flying and static models. In the 1930s Great Depression, they lead the low-priced kit revolution with the "Dime Scale" kits and famous advertisements in Model Airplane News magazine and others. Comet reached it's peak in the 1930s when they acquired the services of Carl Goldberg. Goldberg was a highly accomplished modeler with articles in Model Airplane News and famous designs that won him several National level competitions in the 1930s and beyond. (Carl Goldberg went on to found his own company and produced well designed and popular free-flight and RC aircraft). Comet survived the post World War economic slump and continued kit production until they were bought out by long-time competitor Guillow's in 1998. The entire 1950s "Q" line included (at the date of this kit) Q1 Piper Cub, Q2 Taylorcraft, Q3 Aeronca, Q4 Stinson Voyager, Q5 Cessna, Q6 Fokker DVIII, Q7 Beech Bonanza, Q8 Ryan Navion, Q9 Globe Swift, Q11 F-51 Mustang, Q12 Spitfire, Q13 Thunder Jet (F-84) and Q14 F-86D Saber Jet. Some of these kits were reissued later with different part numbers and various internal parts changes.

Guillows Curtiss P-40 Warhawk - 16 inch Wingspan Rubber Powered Balsa Wood Kit, 501

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc+

$25

From the 1970s. One of a very popular 16.5 inch wingspan series of World War 2 stick and tissue flying kits. Includes die cut balsa parts, vacuform nose, wheels, plastic propeller, hardware, vacuform canopy, colored tissue, insignia and full size plans with detailed building instructions. The model has not been started. The parts are either in factory sealed bag(s) or inventoried 100% complete with all parts, decals and instructions. Guillow's founder, Paul K. Guillow, was a WWI naval aviator. In 1926 he began producing wooden model airplane kits. His 'Shelf Models' were some of the earlier non-flying models in production. Guillow's grew during the model boom of the 1930s, and when the Depression hit the hardest, Guillow's responded with lower prices and became one of the low price leaders, frequently advertising in Model Airplane News and other leading publications. During the war, like most manufacturers, Guillow's was forced to alternative materials such as cardboard and pine. Guillow's survived the post WWII slump by creating many inexpensive profile flying rubber powered aircraft and gliders in the 1950s (along with North Pacific) which became famous - some are still available today. The stick and tissue lines have been updated with laser cut parts and are still in production as of 2009.

Orange Crush-Revell 1915 Ford Model T Sedan - Bagged, 1/32

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Bagged

$22

Very rare kit with a fascinating history. Around 1958/59, Orange Crush of Mexico offered a promotion. They offered free, colorful, plastic model cars if you collected correctly-marked Orange Crush bottle caps. The models are 1/32 scale Revell Highway Pioneer series - although there is no mention of Revell or Lodela anywhere on the boxes. Orange Crush had the boxes and even the instructions specially made for them with no mention of a manufacturer. They were never given part numbers. NOTE: there is no assembly, but one driving lantern has been painted. There is no other painting. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes photocopied instructions. You could redeem your caps two ways - at the Orange Crush truck and at a Modelandia Hobby House. Orange Crush also released two full-color booklets and a complete paint set for the cars. A colorful cardboard box held 7 colors of paint in glass bottles, complete with 'Orange Crush' screw-on caps! The entire promotion was done in coordination with Modelandia Hobby House which had up to 19 stores. Modelandia's name appears on each of the boxes and the paint as well. Robina S.A. was the bottler or distributor of Orange Crush in Mexico at that time. The box side lists the other 18 kits with small color pictures of each and shows three sizes of OC - Family Size (Familiar), Grand (Grande) and Normal. You could also obtain models with Titan bottle caps. Titan was also bottled by Robina and came in large (Titan) and smaller (Titancito) sizes and apparently more than one flavor. We do not know how Orange Crush had access to the plastic kits or who sealed the internal bags with the Crush instructions inside them. We can assume that it may have been Lodela, since they would have had access to the Revell molds. It is not know for how long the promotion lasted, but Orange Crush was one of the most dominant soft drinks in Mexico at that time. Here is one clue: some boxes claim that Modelandia had 13 locations; other boxes, which obviously came later on, claim 19 locations. This may indicate that this promotion went on for a significant amount of time.

Air Lines kits are all Frog molds that the Lines Brothers imported to the USA between 1964-1966. The kits, decals and instructions were made in England, then imported to the USA where Testors created the boxes with the colorful trading cards on the back.
