Blue Bird Fokker D-VII and SE-5A - Bagged, 1/130

Plastic Model Kit

Sold

Very rare and probably from the 1970s. Still factory sealed and includes both scale models. "Blue Bird" is not listed in any of Burn's guide books and there has not been a sale in an on-line auction in the last 10 years. They were made in Japan. These are small-scale models with about 25 parts each and decals. There are instructions (text) and an exploded parts diagram on the back of the top card. Part of the text reads "Inserting the shaft into the hole of propeller or wheels, melt the end of them down with something like a burnt iron." Many thanks to collector and builder Harry Nakano in Japan who wrote that Blue Bird was an old plastic model company in Japan which issued four biplane models in about 1/130 scale. The four kits were bagged with colorful artwork headers and included the Fokker D-7, Albatros D-V, Sopwith Camel and S.E.-5A.

Testors U-2 and SR-71A / SR-71B / CIA A-12/M-12, 1/48, 4055

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good-

Sold

NOTE: builder kit only. Please read carefully. The U-2 is still factory sealed and includes very nice decals and HAWK instructions (this Testors kit is a reissue from Hawk molds). The SR-71 has been started and is missing one part. The cockpit has been built and installed, and the forward fuselage has been assembled (parts 7, 20 & 24) and both cockpit/rear canopy fairings. #16 and #17 have been glued to the rear fuselage. Four clear camera windows are neatly glued to the lower fuselage. NOTE: quality of assembly ranged from 'very good' to only 'good.' There are no gaps in the fuselage but there is some visible glue. The worst part is that the builder glued BOTH the SR-71 A and B rear cockpit/canopy fairings on - that is a mess. NOTE: missing nose gear strut. Otherwise inventoried with all other parts, decals and instructions present. I only recommend the SR-71 as a parts kit, hence the low price.

North Pacific North Pacific Sport'r 24 inch Wingspan Balsa Long Range Rubber Powered Airplane Model, D-129-1

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good+

Sold

Rare; part of the scarce 'Deluxe Flying Model' series from North Pacific. North Pacific was famous for making the rubber powered Sleek Streak and Star Flyer which not only flew circles around the rubber/stick competition, but could be modified to achieve near competition performance. The glider line included the fantastic Stunt Flier, which for an 'out of the envelope' design, flew very, very well. North Pacific went all out with this new 'guaranteed to fly' cabin design - a big departure from the profile sticks. The kit features sheet balsa covering, reinforced with hi-impact plastic inside. Can be flown with a .010 motor also. The model has not been started. The parts and paperworkd are still sealed in the factory clear bag. The entire series consisted of the Bipe, Sport'r, Dust'r and Race'r. The Sport'r, Race'r and Dust'r were quoted as flying 1/8 of a mile and Bipe 1/10 of a mile. Detailed instructions are included for gas engine installation. The high price and very short issue has made all of these kits very rare.

The kit features a highly detailed engine with real valve springs, full ignition harnesses, complete rolling chassis just like the real car, working steering with metal shafts, opening doors, removable hood, tape and belts for holding the spare tires and more. The kit has never been started. The parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes instructions. Originally, the Thomas Motor Company was building bicycles in the 1890s as so may other automakers did. Erwin Ross Thomas, the founder, was experimenting with high speed gasoline engines. From 1898 to 1900 they built commercial engines and gasoline powered tricycles. Then Thomas moved to motorcycles, creating the "Auto-Bi", which was the first practical motorcycle commercially built in the USA. By 1902 he was the largest manufacture of motorcycles. Very shortly after this, the first Thomas Car, the "Buffalo Junior" was produced and 100 sold the first year. The Thomas was originally an advanced car and well known for it's high speed. In 1906, E.R. Thomas entered his cars in the Vanderbilt Cup and Glidden Trophy. The Thomas completed the 2000 mile tour without any mechanical adjustments. That year saw further race victories. In 1907 Thomas had several models with a new four cylinder engine; the G70 from that year was known as the fastest production car in the world. At this time, Rolls-Royce made some public statements about the superiority of the 6 cylinder engine. This caused E.R. Thomas to challenge Rolls Royce to a race from NY to Chicago - Rolls Royce, however, backed out. But four European manufacturers took Thomas up on his challenge, and the Paris newspaper Le Matin sponsored the great event for 1908. This race laid a course from Buffalo, NY to San Francisco, then to Alaska down the Yukon across the Bering Strait on ice, then rerouted to Japan due the thaw, to Siberia and then across Europe to Paris. The Thomas entry was a stock Touring car with George Schuster as the driver. After 169 days and 21,000 miles, the Thomas was the winner. Today it is still considered one of the greatest automobile races ever.
