The Reichspostdampfer (German Mail Liner) Feldmarschall was one of 20 ships operated by DOAL (German East Africa Line) between 1890 and 1914. She was one of a class of three and her sisters were Mayor and Prince Regent. All three were around 6000 GT, had a top speed of about 13 knots and could carry a crew of 136 and 250 passengers in comfort. This was a very exciting time and the voyage to East African was seen as very romantic and adventuresome. This service was terminated in May 1890 with the establishment and operation of a regular German mail steamer connection with East Africa. During WWI, the Fedlmarschall was in Dar es Salaam on August 2, 1914 and was damaged by HMS Hyacinth. She stayed in port, but the British overran German East Africa in 1916. She was taken and renamed Field Marshall. In 1919, she brought Germans from East Africa home to Hamburg. She was then sold to China and later ran around there and was lost.
