Fador 1909 EMF Single Seater / EMF Touring / EMF Roadster - 3 in 1 - Builds Your Choice Of Three, 1/16

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG+

Sold

Rare kit from about 1949. Very unique in that it may well be the first use of the term '3 in 1' when referred to a model kit. Big scale model is highly detailed for that time and measures 8.75 inches long when assembled. Includes parts and instructions for building one of the three versions listed. Features a large number of die-cut, machined and saw-cut wooden parts and excellent plastic wheels, grill/radiator, steering wheel, headlights, lanterns and horn. Also includes metal parts, metal stock and die-cut cardstock. Includes superb, large full-size plans with four elevation drawings, a great many detail drawings, templates and even the correct tufting pattern for the seats! Extensive text instructions are furnished also and there is even a detachable tonneau and detailed painting instructions. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts. The EMF 30 was produced by the EMF company which stood for Everett, Metzger and Flanders - the three owners. But in the early days it was jokingly referred to as 'The Every Morning Fix It" and "Every Mechanical Failure." Each car came complete with a catalog numbering every single part, which made replacements easily obtainable. The engine was four cylinders and turned out a very respectable 30 horsepower. It had a 106 inch wheelbase and held 15 gallons. All cars were painted EMF Red and were a sight to behold. The EMF 30 price with standard equipment was $1250 and included acetylene headlights, generator, side oil lamps, tail lamps, lamp brackets, tube horn, tire repair kit and magneto. Fador was another maker of big 1/16 classic cars and competed with the bigger Hudson Miniatures. Fador called the line 'Smallersters' and the design & parts breakdown of the kits are very similar. The full name was Fador Mfg. Company and the address was 501E. Clinton St., Elmira, NY. Hudson Miniatures, launched in 1948, apparently beat Fador to the market by at least a year or more. Hudson's national success probably lead Fador to choose the same subject (antique cars) and in the same scale, 1/16. Hudson snatched up the most obvious classic automobiles for kit subjects, forcing Fador to select very carefully. Fortunately, they chose well and they are still the only models ever made of these subjects. There is no record of Fador making any plastic kits; the introduction and overwhelming popularity of the Revell/Gowland Highway Pioneers and the models that quickly followed probably drove them out of the market. This was the fate of most wooden kit manufacturers who did not make the transition. In 1949 the Fador line consisted of a 1909 Hupmobile Roadster, 1904 Cadillac Runabout, 1905 REO 4 Passenger Runabout and one kit that was "3 In 1' - it made one of the following: 1909 EMF Single Rear Seater, 1909 EMF Touring or EMF Roadster. The Baker Electric kit was introduced in 1950 and possibly others as well.

Fador 1904 Cadillac Runabout, 1/16

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

Dated November of 1949 with drawings by 'JFM.' Very well detailed for that time. Features a large number of die-cut, machined and saw cut wooden parts as well as excellent plastic wheels, steering wheel, horn and lanterns. There are also metal parts, a realistic (and novel) material for making the visible radiator, metal stock and die-cut cardstock parts. Includes full-size, superb fold-out instructions with multiple elevation drawings, numerous detail drawings and templates, a photo of the completed model and extensive instructions. The kit has never been started. Inventoried with all parts present. The 1904 Cadillac was a sturdy, powerful and easy to operate car selling for only $750 - very low for that time. The Cadillac slogan was 'There is no prohibitive grade for the Cadillac.' It features a four cycle single cylinder water-cooled engine that developed 6.5 horsepower. It has two forward speed and one reverse and could travel at up to 30 mph in high gear. It had a throttle lever located on the steering post in easy reach of the fingers of the steering hand. Cleveland Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat Master Issue - Balsa Flying Airplane - (F4F3), 1/16, SF-83

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Sold

This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. There are several issues, and this was the most deluxe one in the 'Master' box with Wildcat artwork. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete for that time and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood and strip wood, other wood stock, completely turned nose, finished main and tail wheels, covering material, highest quality plans, color insignia, propeller, clear canopy material and more. This is the WWII wartime issue with no metal parts or paint. The model has not been started. Inventoried 100% complete with all parts and plans in amazing 'near mint' condition. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - they were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane supply business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book titled "Aviation's great Recruiter - Cleveland's Ed Packard" by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.
