Louis and his brother He and his brother Arthur came to American in about 1905 and immediately began racing; Louis alone won 10 National Championship races between 1909 and 1919. Louis and Arthur joined forces with William Crapo 'Billy' Durant to form the Chevrolet Car Company in 1911. However, few people got along with Durant and the Chevrolet brothers were no exception. By 1915 they had sold their stock and moved on to Indianapolis. They immediately went back into racing and built their own cars. However, they were not allowed to use the Chevrolet name. The unofficial Chevrolet team was the first to achieve consecutive Indianapolis 500 wins. The first is this kit, the 1920 Monroe Special driven by younger brother Gaston Chevrolet and in 1921 in a Frontenac Special driven by Tommy Milton.
Plastic Model Kit, Box Condition: Exc+

Very rare and much more so in an 'Excellent+' condition box. This model is molded in the correct glossy medium gray with a unique early stand. The model was issued with instructions but did not come with decals. The instructions tell you that '...the plane is molded in the proper base color, and if you intend to paint your favorite air-line markings be sure to use good enamel (not lacquer). Hawk was a producer of wooden kits (often with plastic & metal details) before and after WWII and was one of the handful of manufacturers to produce such kits (known as 'solids') in a consistent 1/48 scale. Hawk made aircraft, ship and train models in this fashion. The very first injection molded aircraft kits in the United States were made by Varney or Hawk in 1946, but they did not catch on quickly. Hawk was always an innovative and quality-driven company, and they took a gamble on injection molded kit well before they were popular. As early as 1946 they issued the 1/48 Curtiss R3C-1 with wheels. Like Varney's Fleet Sub and PT-17, they were shunned by hobby dealers. Hawk persisted with the 'Evolution of the Jet' gift set in 1948 and issued several kits - the Supermarine S6B, Gee-Bee, Howard Ike, Laird (all in acetate) and the F-84G and this Constellation (both in polystyrene). All were in the two-tone one-piece box like this Constellation model.

Built in Japan 1936-38 on a Soviet contract, Soya's delivery was canceled due to tension between the Empire and the USSR. Purchased by the IJN in 1939, Soya survived multiple US and British attacks in WW II, with damage and crew losses. Postwar, the vessel helped to repatriate refugees from Japanese territory seized and occupied by the USSR. After that, Soya enjoyed a long career as an ice breaker and rescue ship. In 1959, news outlets around the world reported Soya's rescue of two huskie dogs after severe weather had forced an earlier expedition to leave them behind. She is now a museum ship, restored to her original, 'as launched' commercial freighter configuration. The long career of this ship exemplifies the recovery and resurgence of the spirit of modern Japan. This model is from all new molds and does justice to this historic vessel.
