Frog Supermarine Spitfire Mk14 (RAF or SEAC Kai Tak) and V-1 Flying Bomb - Red Series, 1/72, F194

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: Exc-

Supermarine Spitfire Mk14 (RAF or SEAC Kai Tak) and V-1 Flying Bomb - Red Series

$22

Well molded kit like most all Frog models. Includes V-1 and Spitfire. Spitfire has optional markings for 'Punjab' Sq RAF Dienst Belgium 1945 or No.132 Sq RAF SEAC Kai Tak Hong Kong 1945. NOTE: this kit has very minor, 'professional' quality subassembly as follows: wing halves built; propeller neatly painted black. There is no other assembly. Inventoried 100% complete and includes decals and instructions. Frog is considered the father of injection molded model kits. The Lines Brothers opened Frog in 1932, capitalizing on the fever caused by Lindberg's solo transatlantic flight. Almost overnight the western populations became 'Air-Minded', and anything aviation was in high demand. Frog created a quality line of stick and tissue rubber powered aircraft and gliders as well as innovative ready-to-fly rubber powered aircraft that required no assembly. The box even contained a built-in rubber motor winder and fuselage holder. Model airplane flight competitions were popular in Great Britain, and one category was 'Rise Off the Ground', or ROG. By changing this to 'Flies Right Off the Ground', the FROG name was born. In 1936 Frog created a line of injection molded plastic models, the first such kit line in the world (Hawk sold a line of injection molded aircraft models in 1934 but they were factory assembled and painted). Named 'Penguin' after the bird that does not fly, the kits were innovative beyond the means of production. At a time when models were simply built by wingspan, the Penguin line was a constant 1/72 scale. Furthermore, a large 1/72 Short S.30 Empire class flying boat contained a full interior and lights! A line of accessories such as AA guns, tractors, hangar, ambulance, sound locater, searchlights and lighting kits were quickly added to the line. WWII caused a pause in production. After the war the box color changed from silver to green, and Penguin kits were also marketed in the USA. Production ended in 1950. Frog quickly expanded and released the Red, Orange, Black, Green, Gold Token, Spin and Comet series as well as Trail Blazers and several others. It is noteworthy that while most manufacturers in the 1940s/50 were making toy-like models, Frog attempted to make very realistic models. For example, 'detailing' kits with excessively large rivets was once very popular. Frog ignored this trend and continued to mold aircraft with fine panel lines and no rivets. As a result, Frog kits can be built into very realistic replicas. Production ended in the late 1970s, but Frog molds are still in use around the world.

Aurora PBY-5A Catalina, 1/74, 374-198

Plastic Model Kit,   Box Condition: VG

PBY-5A Catalina

$125

Rare, first issue from about 1956. This was a fine effort by Aurora for that time and an impressive model when assembled. Features retracting pontoons and rotating propellers. Includes correct early logo instructions which show the clear 'Triangle World' stand. This correct stand is included. This must be one of the first instances of the 'Triangle' stand being used as it is normally associated with oval 'Famous Fighter' logo kits. Molded in gloss silver and clear. The kit has never been started. It has been inventoried complete with all parts and includes decals and instructions. It is interesting to note that the early Aurora PBY issue has at least three small variations to the box top. The very first issue says '1/4 SCALE MODEL' at the top right. Clearly, this kit is not 1/48 scale and someone at Aurora corrected it. Following that, there are two known corrections: early and late. On the early version, the '1/4' was blotted out with a dark blue oval or circle and '5/32' was added after the word 'SCALE.' It was now correct, but the appearance was not completely professional. This box is the later version - on the next box order, they kept the '1/4' blotted out but added a proper looking '5/32' in front of the blot.

Cleveland 1936 Caudron Racer - Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit, 1/16, SF-63

Wood Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

1936 Caudron Racer - Balsa Flying Model Airplane Kit

$89

Very rare 1936 'Silver Box' issue. This is a Cleveland 'SF' or 'Scale Flying' model in museum scale of 1/16. This is the earlier simple cardboard box with the silver printing. All Cleveland kits were exceptionally complete and this one is no exception. Features very high quality balsa printwood, stringers and spars, fully formed & finished wheels, thrust button and spinner, balsa blocks and stock as required, metal stock, scale propeller block, clear windshield celluloid and covering tissue. Includes the famous CD high-quality plans. Even includes the original factory packing tissue. The model has not been started. Inventoried complete with all parts and paperwork. The Cleveland Model and Supply Company played a pivotal role in the development of true scale models. In 1909 Bleriot's English Channel flight caused a surge in aviation and model aircraft around the globe. Several companies were ideally positioned to take advantage of the aviation craze. In the USA, Wading River Manufacturing Co. (1909), White Aeroplane (1911), Ideal Model Aeroplane (1911), Broadfield Model Aeroplanes (1919) were among these pioneers, offering everything from plans and parts to complete kits and ARF models. Lindbergh's 1927 crossing of the Atlantic Ocean caused an even bigger world-wide phenomenon called "The Aviation Craze" that extended up to the start of World War II. Many companies such as Megow, Guillow's and others started right around the time of Lindbergh's flight. Some of these models flew and flew well, but they all had one thing in common - were generally not accurate scale representations. In 1929, a youngster named Ed Packard had a very advanced dream- to produce incredibly accurate, true scale models that flew perfectly. This radical idea established the world's longest running single-owner (77 years) model airplane business- Cleveland Model and Supply Company. To this day, Cleveland models are treasured as the most accurate flying scale models produced. The fact that Mr. Packard started and successfully grew this business during The Great Depression is a testament to his ideals and business skill. I highly suggest the excellent book called 'Aviation's great Recruiter- Cleveland's Ed Packard' by H.L. (Herm) Schreiner. It is an excellent history of the man, his company and the times of the Golden Age of Model Aviation.

Planet Models Junkers Ju-287 V3 (A-1) - (Ju287V3), 1/72, 068

Resin Model Kit,   Box Condition: Good

Junkers Ju-287 V3 (A-1) - (Ju287V3)

$125

Rare, well detailed, high-definition cast resin model. Never started and the parts are still in the internal factory sealed bags and includes decals and instructions. The Junkers Ju287 series was probably the most advanced WWII bomber to actually fly. Development continued until the end of the war; the Soviets captured the remaining aircraft, moved them to the USSR, completed and flew them. This turned out to be key to future Soviet bomber designs.
